Lodge Waikanae No 433 and The St Andrews Lodge No 32 in the Greater Wellington - Taranaki Region, along with support from The Freemasons Charity, funded $1200 towards two laptops for the local branch's Dementia Advisors.

These advisors play a vital role in assisting individuals and families affected by dementia, providing guidance, support, and public education around cognitive decline and dementia within the community. Modern and reliable technology is essential to enable them to carry out their day-to-day responsibilities efficiently, maintain communication with clients, and deliver educational resources effectively.

Two members of The St Andrews Lodge No 32 each received their 50-year Service Badges at the regular meeting at Windana Masonic Hall, Porirua.

Past Grand Master Jim Watt made the presentations.

Malcolm Harfitt, a former long-term member of Lodge Tawera-O-Kapiti, joined St Andrews only recently, after Lodge Tawera-O-Kapiti handed in its Charter. Malcolm is the recipient of a Silver Charity Jewel, has been a District Charity Officer, and it was good to see Adrian Douglas, acting Grand Almoner, in attendance.

Bro Bill Elphick has been a member of St Andrews for all of his 50-year service.

Visitors and regular St Andrews members enjoyed a great celebratory occasion, with both 50-year brethren giving many details about events that happened over the years.

Happy King's Birthday! freemasonsnz.org Please like, share and follow our posts.

His Majesty, King Charles III, is the King of New Zealand, and we celebrate his Official Birthday on the 1st Monday of June, which falls on 1st June 2026 this year.

The King is a constitutional Monarch and the Head of State of the Realm of New Zealand. The King has a Governor-General, The Right Honourable Dame Cindy Kiro GNZM, QSO, who is his representative in New Zealand.

Our first loyal Toast in Refectory after a Lodge Meeting is to ‘The King and the Craft’.

Enjoy the long weekend holiday as we head into our winter months.

The Māori Brethren Association has had a busy few months recognising several Masters who have taken the Chair of the Lodge by presenting the “Charge to an Incoming Māori Master”.
Michael Bailey (Known as TikTok Widowstama) became the Master of Lodge Wangamomona No. 234 on 11 April 2026 and was presented with the charge by Rima Tamaiparea-Puki. .
Doug McWatters, who became the Master of the Alpha Lodge No. 81 in Cambridge on 9 May 2026, was presented with the Charge by Mark Fraser, Past Grand Superintendent of Ceremonies. In attendance was Kane Wharepouri, Master of the Waitomo Lodge No. 469, who took the Chair last year. Doug McWatters was also clothed in a Korowai during the ceremony. Speeches were made in Te Reo, and a waiata was sung to make it a memorable evening for all attending. The Māori Brethren Association was formed to support Freemasons of Māori descent in their journey. The Association will participate in a ceremony if invited to do so, as was the case on 7 April 2026 at Lodge Rangitane No. 365, where they took the Officers' positions for the raising of Sebastian Thompson to the sublime degree of Master Mason.

The “Charge to an Incoming Māori Master” has its origins in the words of the first Māori King, Pōtatau Te Wherowhero, who had visited England and saw how the British Empire was organised. In his speech of acceptance of the Kingship, he stressed the spirit of unity symbolised by the Kingship, likening his position to the 'eye of the needle through which the white, black and red threads must pass'. He called on his people to 'hold fast to love, to the law, and to faith in God'.

Kotahitanga
“Kotahi te kohau o te ngira, kakuhuna te miro ma,
Te miro whero, me te miro pango”.
“Herenga e nei miro e tuia tatou, i roto it e kotahitanga o te tumanako, te whakapono, me te aroha”.

Which is thus briefly translated as:
“There is but one eye of the needle, through which must pass,
the white, the red and the black cottons”.
“Thread these cottons, and sew us together as one in Freemasonry
in peace, in charity, and in love and forsaking all else”

These cottons denote the colour of the different races, and the red cotton signifying blood, the colour that flows through the veins of everyone, irrespective of race, creed or colour.

Our Grand Master, Paul Chappel and Amanda attended the Installation (and associated activities) of Robert Joseph S Moran Jr. as the new Most Worshipful Grand Master for the Grand Lodge of the Philippines, in Tagaytay City in late April 2026.

He was accompanied by a small New Zealand delegation of Mark Pagaulayan, Grand Superintendent Auckland, Grant Brown, Grand Superintendent of Upper North Island, John Handy, Past Grand Sword Bearer and Christine, Andresito Bosier Jr., and Rosa, Grand Steward, Edgener Collado and Anna, and Jeffrey Dizon, Master of The Concord Lodge No 39.

The Grand Lodge of the Philippines has an Annual Grand Installation, and our Grand Master will usually attend once in his three-year term.

This is the second time that a Grand Master from The Grand Lodge of New Zealand has attended a Grand Installation of the Grand Lodge of the Philippines in recent years. They were accompanied by Grand Masters from Australia on both occasions.

The fraternal bond of friendship extended to our New Zealand delegation by the Filipino Brethren was truly appreciated.
