Health protection officers like Georgina work overtime to keep New Zealand safe. They make sure that ships and airplanes don’t bring in infectious disease, respond when water isn’t safe to swim in or to collect kaimoana, contact trace potentially lethal diseases like meningitis and much, much more.

We need officers like Georgina at all hours of the day, 7 days a week ready to respond to emergencies and keep us safe.
They are on-call week by week and often work many hours of overtime during those weeks.

At the moment an on-call allowance and overtime are reflected in her leave allowance, but with the Government’s proposed changes through the Employment Leave Bill, this would no longer be the case.
Georgina, and workers like her, would be losing hundreds of dollars a week during a cost of living crisis.

The PSA will actively campaign to stop this destructive bill and reverse the Government anti-worker agenda.

Thank you to Labour Party MP Priyanca Radhakrishnan who has pledged to protect workers’ leave and holidays.

We’ve asked all MPs to pledge their opposition to the Government's Employment Leave Bill, which would cut pay and leave entitlements for thousands of workers. We’ll keep sharing MP pledges over the coming weeks.

Full text of the pledge:
“I support the right of all workers to have time off work. All workers need annual leave, sick leave, bereavement leave and family violence leave. I will not support any bill that reduces workers’ entitlements to leave.”

PSA Te Kaihautū Māori, Jack McDonald gave evidence today on behalf of Māori members at the Waitangi Tribunal inquiry into the Government’s attempts to remove and weaken Te Tiriti references in law.

These reforms would constitute one of the most extreme attempts to undermine the role of Te Tiriti o Waitangi in New Zealand history.

Our members are clear, these reforms must not go ahead.

Me whakamana i Te Tiriti o Waitangi hei taonga mō ngā whakatupuranga e haere ake nei i mua i a tātou.

Corrections worker Ross lost his leg in 2001 and his accrued leave helped him make ends meet during both his recovery and his transition back into the workforce.
Twenty-five years on Ross still relies on his accrued leave days to attend rehab and visits to the limb centre.

Here Ross tells the Select Committee that the Government’s planned changes to leave entitlements through Employment Leave Bill would have made Ross’s return to work impossible.

The PSA will actively campaign to stop this destructive bill and reverse the Government anti-worker agenda.

This budget is yet another attack from a government contemptuous of te iwi Māori.

It’s time to change the government.

28/05/2026

A budget built on the backs of cutting 1 in 7 public servants is no investment in our future.

This is a black budget for public servants and all the New Zealanders who rely on the services they deliver.

It’s time to change the government.

Today we’ve released figures which show that 58% of public servants are saying that their agency is not adequately staffed to do its job.

52% of public servants are saying that’s got worse in the last year alone.

Tomorrow Nicola Willis will release her budget and it will propose dismissing over 8,000 public servants.
We’ve already had thousands of public servants lose their job.

Nicola Willis is showing complete disregard for public servants, their families, but also the important work they do on behalf of all New Zealanders.

We must vote this government out.

Support workers like Laura pick up extra shifts and work public holidays so people can continue to receive the care that they need.

Here Laura explains how the Government’s Employment Leave Bill will impact essential workers like her by reducing their leave, and pay, in a cost of living crisis.

The PSA will actively campaign to stop this destructive bill and reverse the Government anti-worker agenda.

Salary rises for MPs are imminent, the Government has announced its plan to slash jobs in the public sector and New Zealanders everywhere are doing it tough.

National Secretary Fleur Fitzsimons says it’s really not the right time for Government to be taking this increase.
