Last week the LEAP course spent a relaxed, hands-on morning at Bain Road Wines, dropping wires between the vines and getting a real feel for the work that keeps a vineyard running. The team showed us just how much care goes into growing healthy grapes. We then had a look around the w**ery, where we learnt how grapes are harvested and how w**e is really made. Thank you to Scott and the team for looking after us for the day. Bain Road Wines is a fantastic family business and a genuinely welcoming place to learn and get stuck in. 🍇🍷

Our LEAP students spent last Thursday at The Food Farm helping to prep the maize plot ready for later in the spring. The group also helped to make corn tortillas and ate tacos while sharing stories about farming life. It was a brilliant day of learning, teamwork, and wonderful kai and community. Thank you to Nick and Angela for hosting us. We are already looking forward to coming back in a couple of months with the maize seedlings ready to go! 🌽🌮

Over the last few weeks our GROW, LEAP, and Hospitality students have made the most of the opportunity to step out of their comfort zones and try something new. There were some bumps, bruises, and sore shins from ski boots, but all who went arrived early for the trip, took part in the ski lessons, and tried something they may not get the opportunity to try again. Well done everyone for saying yes to a new adventure, surprising yourselves with your skiing ability, laughing and encouraging each other when the going got tough. 😊

Looking back - our GROW programme day out to the Air Force Museum of New Zealand at Wigram where students were given a guided tour and an insight into our aviation history. Students and tutors seen here testing out the life raft, flying simulator, and a helicopter. Thank you to Chris for the sharing of knowledge and personal connection to the history of the museum. It was a day to remember. 😊

Comcol North Canterbury was part of the North Canterbury Youth Futures careers expo last evening. Marko (Hospitality Tutor), Brooke (GROW Tutor) Sorrell (LEAP Tutor) and Denna (Next Steps Coordinator) were all on hand to discuss opportunities available to young people at Comcol. It was a great turnout with over 1,300 people attending. Thanks to the North Canterbury Youth Futures careers expo organising committee for a great event.🙂

Our new hospitality (cookery and front of house) level 2 programme is underway! Week two and our students have already been creating wonderful food under the guidance of their tutor, Marko (seen here). Well done everyone. We look forward to many more amazing creations. 🙂
