The Enviroschool's Biodiversity & Pest Education Programme hui, lead by Siobhán Culhane of Environment Canterbury, was held in our Comcol North Canterbury Sustainability Hub. It was great to be able to make our Hub available to our wider community and for work that is also a focus for Comcol North Canterbury and in particular for our LEAP Programme. We look forward to seeing everyone back again. 😊 Groups are also welcome to visit our Comcol site to explore the biodiversity corridor, gardens and other spaces. Comcol North Canterbury's FLIP (Feel Like It's Possible) programme, held in Rangiora, is an 8-week programme of weekly 4-hour in person workshops. Small groups with one-on-one mentoring, it is designed to improve your self-esteem, work readiness, and your ability to engage with ​your MSD Case Manager to move into ​and stay in employment.

On Friday it was a crisp start to the day for our Tony (Director/Tractor Driver) as he shifted the bark chips kindly funded by MainPower to where they needed to be. A big thankyou to MainPower for their generous support. This will enable our native trees and shrubs to get well established supporting the native bird life, animals, and insects we are attracting into our environment and making this a great learning space for our students, programme participants, and wider community. 🙂

North Canterbury Sport & Recreation Trust ( NC Sports ) and the MainPower Primary School Coaching Programme was the "Community Impact" award winner at the New Zealand Sport + Recreation Awards 2026. This is a programme which had its beginnings at Comcol (Community Colleges) North Canterbury. It had its origins at a sport coaching programme run by Mark O'Connor and started on the initiative of Scott Beckingsale and Ricky Jacobs. Congratulations to all involved with this programme. The legacy lives on.

Based at our North Canterbury College in Rangiora, LEAP is a 20 week course with the opportunity to gain a New Zealand Certificate in Primary Industry Skills (Level 2) Qualification and 60 credits towards NCEA Level 1 and 2.

Our Monarch Butterfly Project is underway! 🦋

Comcol’s students have been involved from day one. They planted the Swan Plants as homes for the caterpillars, carefully relocated them as they rapidly depleted their own food source, and even acted as safe “landing platforms” for butterflies while their wings dried.

It’s been a reminder for our rangatahi that growth happens step by step. Watching these Monarchs transform mirrors the journey of many of our students, developing new skills and growing more confidence with the right care and support. 🌱

A big thank you to the Comcol staff for your enthusiasm and support in getting this project off the ground!

We provide a FREE Youth Service for 16-19 year- olds offering guidance and support to help young people into education, training, work based learning and more.

​​​Our focus is on supporting our taiohi/young people into education, training and work-based learning- but we do much more. Our youth coaches provide intensive, tailored support to identify their goals and find the best path to reach them.
