North Canterbury NZ Riding for the Disabled

North Canterbury NZ Riding for the Disabled North Canterbury Group of RDA is part of NZRDA which was established in 1972, and now has 58 branches throughout New Zealand.

RDA provides interaction with horses to improve health and wellbeing outcomes for people experiencing disability, or who have specific challenges or needs, enabling them to have meaningful participation in, and contribution to, their community. We are a community based organisation, with charitable status. Our programmes depend on Volunteers. These volunteers all give their time freely and are a v

alued part of our organisation. We are based at 4B Milton Ave in Rangiora. We run lesson on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays. We provide interaction with horses to develop increased ability, independence and self esteem for children and adults with physical, intellectual and social challenges. Our patron is Anthea Dixon - a Para Equestrian - involved with RDA since 2006. Anthea is a great inspiration to us all and we are so privileged to have her as our patron.

National Volunteer Week is still in our hearts and minds, and today we are showcasing our Thursday supertroop.... these are just some of the dedicated team getting excited about CHOCOLATE today. A mix of old hands and new friends, all ready and willing to do everything from bringing horses in and feeding and grooming, setting up games, coaching, leading and sidewalking, moving fences, picking up poo, and whatever else is needed. Our volunteers are such a versatile bunch and we couldn't do it without you. Big Thanks to all. 💕👏

It's National Volunteer Week across Aoteroa, and we take the opportunity to recognise and give Big Thanks to all our wonderful volunteers. This year, along with the celebration chocky, we shared some lovely quotes from our riders and families. Behind each of these, are volunteers helping to make it happen, creating a safe, supportive and fun environment where riders can grow and develop their skills.
And a special Shout Out to our incredible volunteer coordinator Janis, who makes sure no one is forgotten, whether they are hands-on and up front, or working away behind the scenes in a support role.
Watch this space to meet more of our amazing team later this week......

Many hands make ... a full hay shed. Once again the call went out and people rallied. Thank you to all the folks who gave up their time on Sunday to help pick up 200 bales from our new friend Shane at Sefton and stack. Also a shout out to LOBURN HIRE for the loan of a trailer. A huge shout out to the Rangiora Menz Shed for our beautiful new picnic table, delivered today by Steve and Pete. We really appreciate your efforts. This will be somewhere for all members of our RDA family to sit and enjoy a snack or a coffee. Note the longer end on the table to accommodate wheelchair users .

New Zealand Sign Language is one of Aotearoa’s official languages — but for many Deaf people, the real issue is not recognition on paper. It is whether they can communicate, belong, and be fully included in everyday life. NZSL Week is a reminder that language creates connection, dignity, and access.

This year feels especially significant. NZSL Week 2026 marks 20 years since NZSL became an official language of Aotearoa, and this year’s theme is “An Aotearoa Where Anyone Can Sign, Anywhere.” It is a chance to celebrate progress, but also to recognise how much further we still need to go to make communication more accessible in our schools, workplaces, communities, and public spaces.

Because inclusion starts with being able to say:
I see you. I welcome you. You belong here.

This NZSL Week, take a moment to learn, practice, share, and be part of a more inclusive Aotearoa.
