🎯 Top Shots

On Saturday the 30th of May 88 Squadron held our first shooting weekend of the year. This provided our Basic 1 Cadets the opportunity to participate in their first range shoot with the unit.

We also had some great scores across the board with multiple cadets shooting 60-70 points.

On Sunday the 31st the Skills team had their first practice shoot of the year where they covered Marksmanship Principles as well as shooting in Kneeling and Seated Positions. This was a great opportunity for them to practice their skills before they head away for competition!

‼️ Celebrating our Youth

This week marks National Youth Week, a week dedicated to highlighting the contributions that youth make in their communities.

88 Squadron takes immense pride in supporting many community groups and organisations throughout the Waimakariri District every year including: Rangiora and Kaiapoi RSA’s, Canterbury Recreational Aircraft Club, Southern Cancer Society and the Ashley Gorge Track Group.

Cadets are outstanding examples of youth leaders in our community, the standards they set and hold themselves to are second to none.

Thank you to our cadets for your commitment and contributions to the Waimakariri District, your dedication does not go unnoticed!

🎉 Celebrating Success

Over the holidays Cadets from 88 SQN attended Junior & Senior NCO courses held at Burnham Military Camp.

Cadets from 88 SQN represented the unit with pride and distinction on both courses.

On the Senior NCO course both SGT Street and SGT Pulley were awarded course awards for their outstanding performance throughout the week. SGT Street was awarded the Leadership Award while SGT Pulley was awarded the Teamwork award.

These awards reflect the incredible standard that these individuals hold themselves to.

Coming off the Junior NCO Course we were pleased to promote both CPL Ogilvie and CPL Szwarc for their hard work on course.

We’re proud of all achievements and look forward to these cadets bringing their new skills back to the unit.

“Lest we forget”

On Anzac Day 88 Squadron participated in numerous Parades and Services around the Waimakariri District.

Anzac Day is a significant occasion for the our unit with Cadets assisting local RSA Branches to honour those who have selflessly served our country.

Cadets from 88 Squadron attended Services in Sefton, Kaiapoi, Oxford and Rangiora. Cadets were involved in Wreath Laying Ceremonies as well as providing a Cenotaph Guard and flag team.

This year also bought four former cadets who are currently serving in the NZDF together to pay their respects in our local community. It is amazing to see them achieve their goals!

We will remember them.

Today 88 SQN took part helping the Rangiora RSA with the annual Poppy Day.

👆🏼Poppy day is a nationwide street appeal aiming to raise funds for the RNZRSA to support veterans and their families. 88 SQN supported this by collecting donations and handing out Poppies at the Rangiora Pak n Save.

✈️ Exercise Sky Micro

Last Sunday played host to our first flying day for the year! Cadets had the opportunity to go for a flight, attend ground school as well as learning about different aspects of general aviation.

We would like to thank the Canterbury Recreational Aircraft Club for their generous continued support with our flying days, from providing aircraft and volunteer instructors to subsiding flights for the cadets. 88 Squadron appreciates it all!!

🧠 Recently 88 SQN attended a joint NCO training weekend at the Christchurch Cadet Building with cadets from and Selwyn Cadet Unit.

This weekend provided cadets with the skills and techniques needed to lead groups and act as an NCO at their unit. It also provided a great chance for cadets to network with people from other units and share experiences!!

🏆Southern Area and National Skills Competitions

2025 was a highly successful year for the 88 Squadron Skills Team, this year we:

🥇Won the Southern Area ATC Skills Competition

🥈Placed 2nd at the National Aviation Skills Competition

🥇Won the Davy Memorial Drill Award

Competition stands included; Marksmanship, First Aid, Navigation, Drill, GSK/CFK and much more. 88 dominated many stands leading to some outstanding results!

Congratulations to everyone involved, go Mighty 88!!
