🌿 WWOOF NZ Host Spotlight – Martin & Gaylene

Meet Martin and Gaylene, a couple with farming backgrounds and a wonderful mix of traditional skills, creativity and a passion for living close to the land.

Their 5-hectare organic farm, Aylesbury Sun Organic Farm, is home to Finn and Gotland sheep, chickens, ducks, beef and dairy cows, and plenty of wild birds. They practice full-circle organic farming, with much of their food coming directly from the farm.

Martin is a beekeeper, cheesemaker and sourdough baker, with a particular love of trees and animals. Gaylene is an artist and filmmaker who makes her own egg-tempera paints, loves animals and organic farming, and is currently learning more about biodynamics.

There are plenty of opportunities to get involved and learn, from organic horticulture and caring for animals to milking and traditional dairy making. Martin and Gaylene milk their cow daily and make their own butter, cheese, quark and yoghurt, as well as running a small horticultural business. And after a day outdoors, there’s even an outdoor sauna to enjoy!

The location is pretty special too, with the Torlesse Mountains, lakes and braided rivers within an hour’s drive. Christchurch Airport is only 20 minutes away, while beaches and surf spots are around 40 minutes away and the ski fields are just over an hour in winter.

They’re looking for a WWOOFer who would enjoy getting involved with their organic farm, dairy making and self-sufficient lifestyle, while also bringing along their own skills and interests.

A great opportunity for someone wanting to experience organic farming, food production and rural life in a warm and creative home.

Anna, Dean and their family have been welcoming WWOOFers to their farm Koru Creek since 2002, sharing a truly unique off-grid lifestyle on their 100 acre permaculture inspired property along the beautiful Tutukaka Coast.

Imagine waking up in your own peaceful cabin, surrounded by native bush, rolling farmland and the sounds of nature and the beautiful Kaipara Harbour stretching out beyond the hills. 🏡🌳

Meet Lisa and Peter, WWOOF NZ hosts at Rise to Shine Farm, a beautiful 31 hectare (77 acre) property near Tauhoa, just over an hour north of Auckland.
Their diverse farm is a wonderful mix of rolling pasture, wetlands, native bush, pine forest, ponds, gullies and a stream winding through mature forest. From the hilltops, there are stunning panoramic views across the Kaipara Harbour and surrounding countryside. 🌅

Lisa and Peter are developing the property as a regenerative permaculture farm, and giving their animals a happy, peaceful life. They love their animals and their gentle animal family includes cows, pet sheep, chickens and Jemima the much-loved duck, oh, and four dogs and two cats! 🐄🐑🐓🦆

There are plenty of opportunities to get involved, depending on the season, including vegetable gardening, food forests, hand milking cows, caring for animals, homesteading, land management and permaculture projects. 🌱

WWOOFers stay in a separate cabin overlooking the native bush, offering a peaceful place to relax and enjoy the surroundings.

Meet Amber and Ish, WWOOF NZ hosts at Coach House Gardens in beautiful Central Hawke's Bay, New Zealand.

Their small acreage surrounds a 120 year old Heritage NZ listed villa and includes garden rooms, traditional gardens, vegetable beds, fruit and nut trees, native areas and a small glasshouse for propagation and growing.

The gardens are cared for using organic, no-dig and permaculture principles, with composting, seed saving, propagation, nettle and comfrey teas and other traditional organic gardening practices all part of everyday life. 🌱

WWOOFers can get involved in seasonal activities such as pruning fruit trees and roses, weeding, planting seedlings, garden preparation, propagation and preserving. It’s a wonderful opportunity to learn about organic gardening, sustainable living and self-sufficiency through hands-on experience.

Amber and Ish live off-grid with solar power and battery storage and a couple of alpacas roam the property, along with a friendly family dog and cat. 🦙🐶🐱

At River Song you will can take a dip in your own swimming hole, and spend your days surrounded by lush gardens, native bush and organic food. 🌱

Lisa and Geoff have lived sustainably at River Song for 25 years, creating a self-sufficient farmlet where they grow much of their own food — including vegetables, herbs, fruit, eggs and meat. They follow organic and permaculture principles, with plenty of opportunities to learn about growing, preserving, cooking and sustainable living.

WWOOFers can get involved with a variety of seasonal activities, such as:
🥕 Gardening
🍎 Picking and preserving fruit
🍳 Cooking and food preparation
🐔 Feeding the chickens and caring for the sheep
🌿 General garden and land projects
🎨 Practical projects such as painting and other hands-on skills

Stay in a house truck or caravan beside the river, or a room next to the barn.

And the location? Beach and the Mussel Inn just down the road.

Lisa is a herbalist/iridologist and Geoff is a stone carver, and they love meeting travellers, sharing stories and learning about different cultures.

🌿 Looking for a peaceful off-grid WWOOF experience?

This beautiful property sits in a tranquil sub-alpine valley on the edge of Kahurangi National Park, surrounded by mountain views, native bush, and some incredible walking tracks. There's even a gold-bearing river nearby if you'd like to bring your gold pan!

The property is in the early stages of developing its organic gardens, so you'll have the chance to help establish vegetable beds, assemble tunnel houses, harvest seasonal fruit and nuts, and learn about composting, worm farming, and off-grid solar living.

You'll also spend time with friendly rare-breed sheep and chickens, while enjoying comfortable accommodation with your own private space. Although it feels wonderfully remote, the nearest village is only a 10-minute drive away.

Every WWOOF stay is an opportunity to learn new skills, connect with nature, and experience a different way of living.
