Focus Wakefield brings you the latest local news, upcoming events, and stories that matter to our community. ️ In July 2012, the Wakefield Community Council (WCC) invited Wakefield residents to its meeting to consider two forth-coming events with long-term implications for Wakefield. These are:
• The Tasman District Councils’ (TDC) strategic review of Wakefield to p

roduce “a defensible settlement structure plan showing the spatial structure of existing and proposed development, and a programme of capital activities for infrastructure and community services to support development”
• The arrival of the Great Taste Cycle Trail in Wakefield and the need to coordinate the marketing of Wakefield, its businesses and services, and provision of facilities for cycling visitors. As a consequence of residents’ interest in developing a vision and long-term plan for Wakefield’s development, WCC formed a subcommittee to:
“identify the unique character of Wakefield and to take a visionary or forward focused approach to Wakefield, using the discussions at this meeting, and the information from the (2010) Peter Kenyon meetings as a starting point.”

Tasman is on the move, and with that growth comes a clear need to ensure there are enough homes in the right places. Change 1 to the Regional Policy Statement, along with Plan Change 81 to the Tasman Resource Management Plan (TRMP), is part of our response, providing capacity for around 4,500 homes while balancing intensification with carefully located greenfield development.

The plan focuses on making better use of existing urban areas such as Richmond, Brightwater, Māpua, Wakefield, and Tākaka. This balanced approach supports housing choice, helps manage land prices, and reduces unplanned spread onto productive land.

To support liveability, the plan includes design standards covering building height, setbacks, sunlight, and privacy. These help ensure development is consistent and aligned with the long-term needs of the District.

Public notification of Plan Change 81 is planned for early June. A range of resources will be available to support community participation, including guidance on how to make a submission, how to use the online TRMP, a dedicated phone line to speak with a planner, and a public webinar.

A series of Meet the Planner events will also be held:
• Tākaka Service Centre, Monday 25 May, 12.00 pm – 1.30 pm
• Māpua Community Hall, Monday 25 May, 5.30 pm – 7.00 pm
• Richmond Council Chamber, Tuesday 26 May, 5.30 pm – 7.00 pm
• Motueka Library, Wednesday 27 May, 12.00 pm – 1.30 pm
• Wakefield Community Hall, Monday 8 June, 5.30 pm – 7.00 pm

Country Players alongside Glad To Be Here NZ are pleased to announce two fundraising performances for the proposed Wakefield Community Hub on Friday 22 May and Saturday 23 May.

Country Players will present 'The Extraordinary Revelations of Orca the Goldfish' a cheeky play about what can happen when one's fantasies run amok. Glad To Be Here NZ, fresh off the NZ Fringe Festival circuit, will present the murderous whodunnit, 'The Circus of Lord Azure the Miraculous'. These performances are for two nights only with a limit of 100 tickets per night.... so book now to avoid missing out.

Please note, these evenings differ from Country Players normal BYO format. Patrons are welcome to bring their own picnic food, but not drinks, as drinks will be available to purchase from the onsite bar. Dessert will be provided during the interval as part of the ticket price.

Tickets can be purchased online at https://www.waimeasouth.org.nz/events/

Hope to see you there!
