Days for Girls Nelson New Zealand Team continue to be well supported by clubs in Rotary District 9999. Thank you. So heart warming to see our kits being delivered to the outer villages in Fiji. Seeing the Men Who Know health education program being embraced by Fijian men is such a positive step forward. Collaboration with Rotary and Days for Girls is a powerful combination to ensuring that no woman or girl should be denied access to menstrual products and an education. Every man is connected to a woman somehow, who menstruates, whether it be mother/wife/daughter/sister/friend/co worker/classmate. As people who are often in positions of influence & decision making, men & boys are crucial partners in our efforts to shatter the stigma & limitations around menstruation. This is exactly why the Men Who Know program has been developed, as it aims to equip men & boys to better understand the reproductive system of both genders and to continue to support women/girls in a positive environment.

Our club proudly supports Days for Girls Nelson New Zealand Team. Here in Fiji, we see Rotary and Days for Girls working in collaboration to keep girls in school. Also the Men Who Know Health Education Program is also being asked for in the villages, which is very positive.

Congratulations to Karen Stade who will be taking the reigns to lead our District in 2027!

Congratulations to our very own Karen Stade, who has just been appointed District Governor Nominee for our South Island-wide Rotary District 9999. She will be District Governor in the 2027-2028 year.

Karen has been a member of Whakatū Rotary for 14 years. She has twice served as Club President and was Assistant Governor for the Top of the South Clubs (Nelson, Tasman, Marlborough, and Buller) between 2021 and 2024. During that period, Karen was awarded a Paul Harris Sapphire Pin by DG Nick Courtney for her work in rallying Rotary support of the Westport floods and the District Governor's Medal by DG Jan Boustead. Her last year as Assistant Governor was spent working with DG Phil Gully a fellow Whakatū member. She was also part of that year's planning team for the District conference, which hosted former Rotary International President Jennifer Jones.

Karen is currently a member of the District's Growing Rotary team, with particular focus on the Top of the South, and is our club's Rotary Foundation and End Polio Now Chair. She also runs the Whakatū website and Facebook and Instagram pages.

A former journalist, Karen works as a historian, researching and writing commissioned history books. In 2017, she received a Queen's Service Medal for services to the community, primarily for historical research and the community, with special acknowledgement of her End Polio Now work.

Her husband, Martin de Ruyter is a club member and former president, and their son Troy Stade will be club president for the coming 2026-2027 Rotary year.

Karen is pictured flanked by club co-president Julie Bryant and past district governor Phil Gully. The club is proud to have two District Governors within the space of five years.

It is with deep concern we have heard that the UK government has decided to withdraw its financial support for the Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI).

We are at a critical stage in the campaign to eradicate polio. Loss of financial support for the eradication campaign could have dire consequences.

Rotary International pioneered the campaign to eradicate polio. Our members have given huge amounts of financial, volunteering and advocacy support to this endeavour, and we remain fully committed to the task of eradicating polio as our organisation’s number one humanitarian goal.
