𝗜𝘁'𝘀 𝗙𝘂𝗻 𝗙𝗮𝗰𝘁 𝗙𝗿𝗶𝗱𝗮𝘆!
𝗠𝗲𝗲𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝗳𝗹𝗼𝗼𝗿’𝘀 𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗼𝗳 𝗮 𝗯𝗼𝗮 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗰𝘁𝗼𝗿! 🧐
This native flatworm, with its distinctive dark stripes, is a formidable predator that hunts other small invertebrates like the cockroach seen here.
When a flatworm catches its prey, 𝙞𝙩 𝙙𝙤𝙚𝙨𝙣'𝙩 𝙟𝙪𝙨𝙩 𝙗𝙞𝙩𝙚—𝙞𝙩 𝙜𝙤𝙚𝙨 𝙛𝙪𝙡𝙡 𝙨𝙘𝙞-𝙛𝙞.
By wrapping its soft, flexible body around a victim, it initiates a process called pharyngeal eversion.
Essentially, 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙛𝙡𝙖𝙩𝙬𝙤𝙧𝙢 𝙩𝙪𝙧𝙣𝙨 𝙞𝙩𝙨 𝙤𝙬𝙣 𝙨𝙩𝙤𝙢𝙖𝙘𝙝 𝙞𝙣𝙨𝙞𝙙𝙚 𝙤𝙪𝙩, 𝙚𝙭𝙩𝙚𝙣𝙙𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙖 𝙩𝙪𝙗𝙚-𝙡𝙞𝙠𝙚 𝙥𝙝𝙖𝙧𝙮𝙣𝙭 𝙩𝙤 𝙙𝙤𝙪𝙨𝙚 𝙞𝙩𝙨 𝙢𝙚𝙖𝙡 𝙞𝙣 𝙢𝙚𝙡𝙩𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙚𝙣𝙯𝙮𝙢𝙚𝙨.👀
This allows it to digest the prey from the outside in, turning its dinner into a "protein smoothie" before slurping it back up!

Some great news for a wet Friday evening 👇💚🌿

The Kaimai Mamaku is free of kauri dieback!

Kaimahi/workers from the Kaimai Mamaku Restoration Project (including Ngāti Hako, Ngati Tumutumu Trust, Te Puāwaitanga o Ngāti Hinerangi Iwi, Ngāti te Wai, and Ngamanawa Incorporation) and Department of Conservation spent more than 70 full days collecting data across more than 20,000 hectares of the southernmost kauri forest.

DOC Regional Lead Kauri Protection, Tracy Mezger, coordinated the extensive survey effort and says it's a relief to have Phytophthora agathidicida, the pathogen that causes dieback, absent from the forest.

“Our worst fear was it was already here and we’d be playing catch-up to protect these beautiful trees from the devastating impacts of kauri dieback disease. But the level of sampling done means we’re very confident it’s not there – and we’re committed to keeping it that way.”

At the weekend 16 Member Groups of Bay Conservation Alliance came together to explore governance foundations - go you guys!

This is a new support program to help community conservation groups recognize their strengths, gaps and improvement opportunities. The aim is to strengthen and grow our ability as a collective to operate efficiently and comfortably in governance, with a license for a bit of fun along the way.
