Do you know the origin of our foundation statement, Te Hunga Hauā Mauri Mō Ngā Tāngata Katoa? Now part of our logo, it was gifted to us by the late Dr Kihi Ngatai (QSM) in 2007.

Dr Kihi was awarded an honorary Life Membership for his services to CCS Disability Action in 2017 and is dearly missed. As our Kaumatua, he contributed to the organisation for many years. He was inspired by his whānau and his many years of work with CCS Disability Action’s Bay of Plenty Maori Unit.

The line means 'All people have mauri, life force, and all life force is equal' – the basis of our identity. Its meaning is derived from the Māori legend of Tāwhirimatea, the God of the weather.

Tāwhirimatea had many children that made up the different ‘hau’ (winds). These include te hauātakataka (cyclone), te hauāwhiowhio (hurricane), te hauāuru (west-wind), te hau-pukeri (violent wind), te hau-maiangi (light wind) and te hau-mārire (peaceful wind), to name but a few. The children of Tāwhirimatea were ‘hauā’ – unique in their own way. It is this interpretation of ‘hauā’ that we draw upon.

This Te Wiki o te Reo Māori is a beautiful opportunity to reflect on what these words invite of all of us: to value disabled people as equal members of our society.

GAMBLING HARM AWARENESS WEEK

If you or you know of someone who is on a gambling spiral e te whānau, there is plenty of support services out there!

Poutiri Wellness Centre are holding a free screening to create awareness and provide information at the Capitol Theatre Te Puke NZ tomorow at 10am.

Get down there if you can, take a group and reach out for support!

☺️

Join us tomorrow at the Capitol Theatre, Te Puke, for a free screening of DISCONNECT TO RECONNECT, part of Gambling Harm Awareness Week.

There'll be tea and coffee from when doors open, and Jayanna Edge, our Peer Paeārahi at Poutiri Wellness Centre, will speak before the film about her own experience with gambling harm.

Disconnect to Reconnect looks at gambling harm in Aotearoa: how it happens, the systems behind it, and what it means for whānau.

He mihi nui ki a Capitol Theatre mō tō rātou tautoko i tēnei kaupapa. Thank you Capitol Theatre Te Puke NZ and Te Rangihaeata Oranga
