It's been a while! We have all been holding up our own little corners of the tourism world, staying connected in various ways.

But today we have come together as a whānau whānui in the huge metropolis of Maketu! We celebrate another year of goodness with our AGM, and we thank our brother Deon, sister Ngaire of Muirs Tours for hosting us!

Travel Ed NZ is led my Les Millard of Ngā Pōtiki hapū and Ngaiterangi Iwi.

An influential guide who offers experiences across Tauranga, including Te Rae ō Pāpāmoa, brings together pre-European stories of our ancestors to bring awareness as to why this whenua, our whenua is so important to us. For the cruise visitors, he's providing an exclusive chartered tour of Tauranga, stopping at various places and sharing the local way of life.

He is sometimes accompanied by daughter Erena to help him manaaki the manuhiri.

Some locals may remember him as a teacher from the 80s/90s 😅 (he'll love that), others know him as a good friend and whānau. We know him as someone with solid values who adds mana to our roopu, with immense passion for education and tourism.

Time to meet some of our beautiful whānau.

Paula from Te Ara Tourism, and of Te Pirirākau hapū of Ngāti Ranginui and Ngati Hē of Ngai te Rangi iwi here in Tauranga, provides a tour of the Te Puna and Omokoroa area by E-bike.

She has been working on her venture for approx. 3yrs now, before the C-word hit us. She offers an exclusive tour of that area, bikes and equipment included, with stories shared of our Pirirākau ancestors, their way of life, the struggles faced, and how we've overcome them.

She's a stunning host, and ends the tour at The C***r Factorie. She also lives in Te Puna and is well involved in iwi, hapū, marae and hāpori happenings.

He mihi anō ki a Weach rātou ko ēnei taiohi nō te Wharekura ō Mauao - Te Reo Whakakoko ō Mauao.

A beautiful start to the Cruise season. If we stay connected as Māori operators to the tourism happenings in our rohe, on our whenua, on our moana, we get to influence what best represents us as tangata whenua.

For the first time ever, we have a collective presence. And it feels darn good and right.

New toilets for Salisbury Wharf yay! Just in time for the first cruise ship.

5:30am tomorrow, the Majestic Princess comes into port. Our tauira from the impressive kapahaka group of Te Wharekura ō Mauao will be welcoming her and her passengers in.

Meanwhile, the rest of Tauranga will be enjoying the last couple days of the school holidays in our beautiful rohe!

Our Whānau Tāpoi Māori ō Tauranga are almost set to go at the iPort, ready for the first cruise ship to visit this Saturday since they were abruptly cancelled for Covid in March 2020.

We are amongst a whole heap of well established and experienced tour operators, all non-Maori! So how proud do we feel to add some colour 😅 aroha, collaboration, culture and tangata whenuatanga into the mix! Not to mention an incentive for passengers to "stay local".

It's our first cruise season too, so we are pretty fresh and nervous. Appreciate the astounding support and encouragement from Bay of Plenty NZ and NZ Māori Tourism to get us here. Likewise, we have been met with enthusiasm from the other operators, who we are looking forward to working alongside.
