The Challenges: A History of the Hawke Cup – The Coveted Trophy of District Cricket Supremacy 1910-2025

Alec Astle and Murray Brown, with statistics by Francis Payne

This substantial book of 485 pages is a comprehensive account of the Hawke Cup challenges since Lord Hawke first presented the trophy in 1910. Over the past three years, the authors have compiled a story of all the challenges for this trophy, which have inspired players and ignited fierce district rivalries. It details how teams built legacies, shaped generations of cricketers by providing them with a stepping-stone to higher honours, and rallied communities. The book includes over 200 profiles of influential players and is illustrated with hundreds of photographs of teams and players. The book is a tribute to the players, administrators and supporters who made it all possible. It is about them and for them, and for all lovers of cricketing history. Order the book now by emailing Alec Astle ([email protected]) or Murray Brown ([email protected]) with your name, email address and number of books required. We will then contact you with the price, postage, delivery and payment details. The price is $75 plus packaging and posting.

It’s not every day you get to say one of the game’s greats started right here in your community.

From WBOPCA junior comps, to Tauranga Boys’ College, to Te Puke CC, to the BOP Men's team and beyond, Kane Williamson’s journey has inspired young cricketers right across the world - but particularly here in the Bay of Plenty where he started.

His achievements for New Zealand have been remarkable – but just as important has been the way he’s gone about it. For our kids, Kane has been the ultimate role model. We are incredibly proud, and incredibly grateful.

Congratulations on an exceptional international career 👏
