Great endorsement reel from a member of the public after attending our Tuesday service in Napier at the Baptist church. Just to clarify our session runs from 4 to 5pm, not 3 to 5pm, although the queue often starts from 3pm. ☺️

Our VOLUNTEER of the MONTH is Jenny Collins! 💯💥
Originally from Wanganui, Jenny has been living in Hawkes Bay for the last 40 years. With a farming background, Jenny has always worked hard, both on and off the farm. In her earlier days her adventurous side took her overseas, where she spent time sheep shearing in the United States and working on a horse ranch in Colorado. She is also a proud mum and grandmother!
Jenny joined the Nourished for Nil team as one of the original volunteers at our Camberley site in 2021 (where she still helps today). She also regularly helps as a part of our wider Hastings team at our pop-up events, is hands on for the Thursday mornings seniors’ service, and every week stocking shelves at the Hastings Social supermarket. Thank you Jenny for your great smile and for being one of our superstar volunteers! 🙌

Our March VOLUNTEER of the MONTH is the amazing Peter Julian 🙌

Born in Dannevirke, Peter attended a tiny rural school with the famously long name Taumatawhakatangihangakoauauotamateaturipukakapikimaungahoronukupokaiwhenuakitanatahu, before finishing his schooling at Hastings Boys’ High. He’s been married for 52 years 😳 and is the proud father of two daughters and two grandchildren.

A builder by trade, Peter also worked in building removal and his skills have been greatly appreciated at Nourished! He regularly fixes our trestle tables, gives plastic crates and bins a new lease on life and recently built the pātaka that is conveniently located just outside our Hastings depot.

A passionate outdoorsman, Pete also gives his time to Search & Rescue, hut rebuilding, track clearing, and albatross chick recovery on the Pyramid in the Chathams.

Peter has volunteered with us for 3 years and loves the camaraderie, fun, and helping keep good food out of landfill.

Thanks, Peter, for your hard work, kindness, and great sense of humour—we’re super lucky to have your time and skills in this organisation!

Sharyn Tate is our VOLUNTEER of the MONTH! ✨️ Sharyn was born in Waipawa and moved to Hastings when she was 4 years old. She worked at Watties for 46 years 👏 in various roles and fully retired in 2023. She is a proud mum of two sons and 14 grandchildren.
She came along to Nourished for Nil after a friend recommended her to us and started off working in our Hastings Social Supermarket in June 2025. There she met a lovely welcoming group of ladies who she truly enjoys working with and says the teamwork is the best. Her hobbies are walking, gardening, swimming and sightseeing with family and friends. We are very grateful to her contribution in our supermarket where her easygoing nature is a real asset! 🙌

VOLUNTEER OF THE MONTH Kim Senior! 🙌

This month we’re thrilled to celebrate Kim, a true Hawke’s Bay local who regularly brings warmth, humour, and a genuine passion for helping others to our organisation. Since coming on board 3 years ago she has gotten stuck in and helped wherever she is needed. After raising her family and working in local food manufacturing for most of her career, Kim loves that her role at Nourished for Nil helps ensure rescued food is put to good use rather than going to landfill. She’s also especially grateful for the friendly, welcoming volunteer community she’s found here.

Outside of volunteering, Kim is slowly doing up her house, creating beautiful mosaics, heading to the gym, and blasting funk music during her workouts. She’s also kept busy by her two much‑loved cats and her dog. Thank you for being such a rock star Kim! ✨️
