A change of lifestyle at 65 and living to 100+ why couldn’t it be your story too?

From my story “The Island Where People Forget to Die”

In 1976, 65 year old Stamatis Moraitis was diagnosed with lung cancer and given less than a year to live. After several doctors confirmed the diagnosis, Moraitis refused treatment and moved back to the blue zone Greek island of Ikaria in . Stamatis was born there and wanted to be buried with his ancestors. He reconnected with his faith walking to a tiny Greek Orthodox Church near his home. His childhood friends began visiting and they talked for hours, sharing a bottle or two of wine. Moraitis planted vegetables in a small garden even though he thought he wouldn’t be around to harvest them. In the evening, he walked to the local tavern to play tavli (backgammon) with his friends. Over 3 decades later, on a trip to visit his children in the U.S., he tried to return to his doctors to see why he was still alive. “My doctors were all dead,” he said. Moraitis passed away at the age of 102, 36 years after being diagnosed with terminal lung cancer. RIP Mr. Stamatis Moraitis Photo by Andrea Frazzetta 🇬🇷 greecestagram

They are an awesome and supportive organisation with loads of opportunity to connect with others.

🚨 New Mentor Campaign – 10 Good Blokes 🚨

We’re on a mission to find 10 good blokes to step up and make a real difference. 💪

Our goal: 10 men signed up as mentors by July 2026.
Why? Because right now, over 70% of our waitlist are boys, and they’re waiting for someone like you.

Listen to a podcast featuring one of our male mentors, who is also a Mentor Coordinator at BBBS, to learn more about what becoming a mentor involves: https://shorturl.at/WXCCa

Being a mentor doesn’t mean doing it alone. You can even take this journey as a couple - supporting each other while changing a young person’s life together.

This is where our community comes in 🤝
👉 Tag someone who’d make a great mentor
👉 Nominate a good bloke you know

If we reach this goal, it means 10 more boys gain a positive role model - someone who shows up, listens, and cares.

Let’s make it happen. 💙

Truth is we are all going to exit at some point but when? Each decision we make toward better health has a huge impact on our longevity and overall enjoyment of life. Living a life in pain, especially for conditions that can be cured by simple changes to start with around nutrition and exercise has got to be worth it.

Sure, it may take some work and some getting used to but the side effects of good health… well there aren’t any. Compare this to other interventions and do the math.

Time for change?

Today is Valentine’s Day!
A good reminder to love your ❤️

Fact : Heart disease is the leading cause of death for men in New Zealand, with over 3,600 to 3,700 men dying from cardiovascular disease annually.
Men in New Zealand are generally affected by heart disease about 10 years earlier than women and have a higher risk of developing it.
The latest research shows men need to start prioritising their heart health in their 30’s.

It’s never too late to turn your health around and avoid possibly being one of the above statistics. 😔 and enjoy loads more Valentine Days ahead. 💓

PS Reach out and we will send you out a copy of the Blokes Book packed full of information on where to start! 🚶 💦 🥬 ☀️

Balancing on one leg generally doesn't take a lot of thought when we are young. Typically our ability to hold this pose matures by around the ages of nine to 10 years old. Our balance then peaks in our late 30s before declining.
If you're over the age of 50, your ability to balance on a single leg for more than a few seconds can indicate a surprising amount about your general health and how well you're ageing.
It can bring a range of benefits to your body and brain, such as helping to reduce the risk of falls, building your strength and improving your memory.

Daily activities such as standing at the sink while washing up or brushing your teeth are also perfect opportunities to train your single leg standing abilities, researchers say.

Try keeping swaying to as little as possible for as long as you can. Gains can be achieved from spending just 10 minutes a day practicing your balance.

Spending a few minutes each day balancing on a single limb can make you stronger, boost your memory and keep your brain healthier.

Have you heard the word Ikigai?
It’s a Japanese word/concept that means a reason to get up in the morning, your purpose.
In a world that’s often focussed on being full on and fast with no time left to reflect on true purpose, knowing your Ikigai could be life saving.

Finding your Ikigai.
It's a journey: Discovering your ikigai is a process of self-reflection, not a destination.
It's not always one thing: Your ikigai can be broad, encompassing multiple activities or relationships, like family or a simple appreciation for nature, not just a grand career.

Balance is key: The goal is harmony between personal fulfillment and serving a greater good.

Simple joys count: True ikigai isn't always about major achievements; it's about finding value and bliss in everyday moments, like a walk, quality time with family and friends, listening to music, or sitting with a coffee and feeling the sunshine on your face.

So what’s your Ikigai ?

Apparently listening to your favourite tunes every day can reduce the risk of dementia in later years, plus it’s a great way to relax right?

A study from Monash University (Australia) followed more than 10,000 people for a decade and found that those who regularly incorporated music had up to a 39% lower risk of developing dementia. The reason? Music is one of the few stimuli that lights up several areas of the brain at the same time: memory, language, attention, emotions, and coordination.

In addition, melodies with emotional weight help evoke memories, reduce anxiety, and lower levels of cortisol, the stress hormone. It’s not about talent or playing an instrument: listening, singing, or simply letting a song play already activates these protective mechanisms.
