With FND, aphasia-like symptoms may include:

Difficulty finding words
Speaking slowly or with long pauses
Using the wrong words
Trouble forming sentences
Difficulty understanding language at times
Speech becoming absent altogether for a period (sometimes called functional speech disorder)

These symptoms can appear suddenly, often during or after:

Functional seizures
Severe fatigue
Stress or emotional overload
Pain flares
Other neurological symptoms such as weakness, tremor, or dizziness

One key feature is that the difficulties may fluctuate—speech can be severely affected one moment and improve significantly later.

However, new or sudden aphasia should always be medically assessed, especially if it is:

The first time it has happened
Accompanied by facial drooping
One-sided weakness
Vision changes
Severe headache
Confusion or reduced consciousness

This is because conditions such as a Stroke can also cause aphasia and need urgent treatment.

For someone known to have FND, useful strategies during an episode can include:

Giving extra time to respond
Asking simple yes/no questions
Encouraging communication through writing, typing, gestures, or pointing
Reducing background noise and distractions
Avoiding pressure to "push through" the speech difficulty
