This morning, we're featuring next week's "Soil Health for Profit" conference speaker, Dr Rowland Tsimba. He is the National Research & Agronomy Manager at Genetic Technologies (Pioneer®), in Hamilton. An agronomist with more than 25 years’ experience, he has worked across agricultural research, the seed industry, and on-farm extension in New Zealand. He leads Pioneer’s national field research programmes, with emphasis on maize agronomy, establishment, soil health, and tillage systems, including practical ways to reduce environmental impacts. Drawing on a long-term Waikato continuous maize silage cropping study, he will compare conventional, strip and no-till systems. Using establishment, yield, soil physical performance, and early carbon dynamics, he will challenge assumptions and raise practical decisions that matter in the paddock. 27-28 May in Havelock North www.landwise.org.nz/events/soil-health-for-profit

Dirk Wallace is a Senior Researcher with Foundation for Arable Research (FAR), passionate about building great soils that work for growers and improving understanding of the relationships between soils, crops, and profit. At LandWISE 2026 - Soil Health for Profit, he will present findings from work that captured grower experiences, impacts and decisions made during recovery from Cyclone Gabrielle. The team recorded both successes and setbacks, and their work provides a practical, experience‑based resource to support faster and better‑informed recovery following extreme weather events. Have a look at what is on offer in Havelock North at the end of May. www.landwise.org.nz/events/soil-health-for-profit/

The Bay will be buzzing, even more than usual! So much info to share, such a wise and practical bunch of presenters. Join the LandWISE Conference and question the speakers and the panel. Then attend the conference's Horizons Regional Council Field Event to see things in action. EVs, solar power, electric robots for orchards, and vineyards and vege farms. And bio strips and planters to reduce chemical dependence...... www.landwise.org.nz

⚡ Many of the 20 or so community groups that have popped up across New Zealand in recent months are planning events and expos, and many are showing locals what they could save by going electric. Electrify Hawke's Bay is combining both of those things at 12pm Friday 23 May and Rewiring Aotearoa CEO and Electric Cherriesco-founder Mike Casey will be there to answer your questions, alongside Uttam Singh Floray and Freenergy's Aaron Duncan.

If you want to learn from local case studies, dissect your electricity bills or dig into solar installation, this is the workshop for you. So find out more about the event and RSVP here 👉 https://loom.ly/Gud66iA

The day before this event on May 22, the Landwise Conference in Havelock North is focused on 'Getting to Carbon Positive' and it is dedicating half a day to rural electrification.

Given the growing interest in farm solar and storage - and the growing range of electric machines that are able to cut operational costs and emissions - it's not surprising and Casey and Solayer's Becks Smith will share their stories (and savings), Pieter-Willem Hendriks will talk about Lincoln University's electric research farm, and Rippletech's Ra Cleave will focus on electric vehicle conversions.

The Bay will be buzzing next week.
