Hamilton Acoustic Music Club

Hamilton Acoustic Music Club HAMC provides an environment for musicians and music-lovers to come together. We also hold concerts and events in an appreciation of music in all its diversity.

HAMC runs club meets on the first Sunday of each month to provide musicians with the opportunity to showcase their talents. We welcome members and newcomers alike. The biggest event in our calendar year is the Hamilton Folk Music Festival, more commonly known as 'Hamsterfest'. Held over four days, this family-friendly festival offers a wide variety of entertainment from concerts to workshops to campsite jam sessions.

SADIE & JAY
Wielding guitars and a double bass Sadie & Jay honour the craft of songwriting with gritty
historical songs of spirited characters, events and legends. Encompassing trad-like to
contemporary folk, ragtime blues to ballads, comedy to drama, all embellishing, highly
original songs.
Offering a perspective on life not often taken in modern times; songs based on real people
and actual events. Sadie & Jay's aim in part is to uncover, celebrate & contribute some of
these little-known tales to the Antipodean folk fabric.
"Sadie & Jay demanded my attention from their first offering, not only for their superb
musicianship, lovely use of dynamics and vocal shading but really topical, relevant and
brave songwriting about issues that need raising." Robin Brew

ALAN DOWNES

There is probably no songwriter better suited to preparing us for New Zealand Music Month than Alan Downes.

Alan is a storyteller. He was raised in a tiny back country Kiwi farming community and his songs are (mostly) true tales of people and places told with careful observation, a good dollop of humour and a little nostalgia.

Alan’s style can be compared to bush poetry. With original songs and an acoustic guitar, his music is a treasure chest that captures the essence of folk and country traditions. His songs form a narrative of our home, our country and our place in the world.

Come along prepared to laugh and maybe shed a tear as Alan takes you on a journey through Aotearoa New Zealand.

Alan has four CDs of original music. The Best (2013), Moving On (2014) and Road Trip (2017). No Going Back was released in 2020. The songs keep coming.

Hi All,
we are proud to announce our next Concert!

Jenny Kilpatrick and Tony Ricketts have been playing music together off and on for decades, stealing the name Portable Panic from their company. Teenage Jenny was introduced to the Wellington folk scene by her big brother, and when they met was known for singing British Trad.

Tony was an Auckland singer-songwriter with a penchant for old pop songs. His first group was Easy St. with Chris Price and Kerrin Worsfold before Chris moved to Wellington. Early this century he was part of a Celtic band called Tattie Jock. There have been three albums of his songs.

After they moved to Island Bay in 2012 Tony retreated somewhat from music, while Jenny’s been busy playing bass and singing with The Madillionaires,The Eagals and The PJs, among others.

They decided it was time for Tony’s songs to be heard again, and is a chance to play recent songs as well as oldies.
