Dave first joined Age Concern Canterbury as a volunteer visitor, driven by his awareness of the profound impact loneliness and isolation can have on older members of our community. Through his time in this role, he built meaningful connections and offered companionship to those who needed it most.

Recognising an additional and growing need, Dave generously extended his contribution by offering his skills as a technology tutor and troubleshooter. He supports clients who struggle to navigate modern devices and digital communication, helping them build confidence and independence in an increasingly digital world.
Dave is deeply committed to the belief that everyone deserves to feel connected. He is passionate about ensuring older people have the ability to access and use modern communication tools effectively, enabling them to stay in touch with family, friends, and essential services.

He has a natural gift for demystifying technology, transforming something that many clients find intimidating and frustrating into something manageable and even enjoyable.
Through both his compassion and practical support, Dave has made a lasting and meaningful difference in the lives of many.

Today we have our wonderful volunteer, Sue Currie. Not only does she look after the popular Parklands Steady As You Go exercise class, but she also volunteers with our visiting service! Volunteers like Sue have a heart of gold and we appreciate the time she gives to her community.

Having been a Peer Leader for 9 years, she brings expert guidance to the role while fostering a fun and social atmosphere in the classes. In her other role as a Visitor, she has been providing companionship for the last 5 years. Both of these roles require compassion and kindness which Sue is a great example of. Thank you for all you do.

Our next volunteer Aaron Porter is one of our Companion Walkers. He volunteers to walk with 2 clients. He walks 2 days per week with one and 3 days per week with the other.

This is above and beyond what is required but both parties are finding the social interaction to be very beneficial. Getting to know each other while getting out of the house and getting more active is a great motivator. Thanks so much for what you do.

National Volunteer Week!

We are very excited to be celebrating National Volunteer Week and all the amazing volunteers that are at the heart of Age Concern Canterbury important work. This week we will be highlighting some of our volunteers, taking a closer look at the work they do and celebrating the range of volunteers we have.

First up is Mitch Green. Mitch has been a Volunteer Driver for us at Age Concern Canterbury since April 2025. Mitch is our youngest Driver at 30 years of age, and undergoes his full AA Assessments and training like all our drivers, passing with flying colours. Mitch works full time doing shift work, and emails us his work schedule each month for us to slot him in to drive when he can. Mitch has always had a close affinity with his grandparents, and it was this that inspired Mitch to approach Age Concern to become a Driver.

Mitch is popular with all our clients; they love him and love interacting with a younger person while on their outings. Since Mitch came onboard, his Nana has also joined and now regularly goes out fortnightly on a Café Group. Mitch is caring and interacts well with all ages. He is just one of our inspirational volunteers.

- Glaucoma Symposium -

On Saturday 16th May, from 10.00am to 11.15am, Glaucoma NZ are hosting a symposium. With two local ophthalmologists and an optometrist this is a great opportunity to get trusted information about living well with Glaucoma. If either you or a loved one is living with glaucoma, this would be a great event to attend.

The event is free however we ask that they register for catering purposes. You can register by calling 0800 452 826, emailing [email protected] or through this link www.glaucoma.org.nz
