Te Rā Mokopuna – National Safe Sleep Day 💚

Yesterday we gathered in Ōtautahi for our Te Mana o Te Whānau wānanga, with 49 practitioners coming together to share, learn, and reflect on how we support our pēpi and whānau.

One thing that came through strongly, many whānau already know the safe sleep messages. The real challenge is whether safe sleep is achievable within the realities they’re facing.

As one participant shared:
“The SUDI section was so valuable. It opened my eyes to really paying attention to the realities for each whānau and how we can support them to keep pēpi the safest they can with what they have.”

This kaupapa isn’t just about education, it’s about connection, cultural safety, and walking alongside whānau in ways that are practical and mana-enhancing.

A special mihi to Nichaela Gulbransen, our Safe Sleep Kaimahi here at the Trust. If you’re wanting to learn more or need support, we encourage you to connect with her - she’s here to walk alongside whānau on this journey.

Today, on Te Rā Mokopuna, we’re reminded that keeping our pēpi safe is a collective responsibility.

Ngā mihi to everyone who showed up and contributed to this important mahi - Because every mokopuna deserves the opportunity to thrive 💫

E afua mai i mauga tetele manuia o le ‘nu’u - from the high mountains are the blessings of the village.

This beautiful Samoan proverb is layered with meaning. One being, that blessings upon the people are bestowed by elders.

This morning we listened in as Noel Grant (featured), Effie Lokeni, and Tuhoro Aubrey shared their heritage and stories with us. Visuals of tupuna, villages, and homesteads….meaningful connectors to real places they carry with them, and part of the richness they add to our service delivery supporting whanau.

Fa’afetai lava, to our Samoan kaimahi who bring the awesomeness of who they are. Happy Samoan language week! 🇼🇸

He mihi nui ki ngā hunga katoa i tū rā ki runga i te atamira o Waitaha

Captured here representing the heart and strength of her rōpū, Kirstyn Makitānara showing us how it's done!

These beautiful pieces will be gifted to mothers and whānau in our care, bringing warmth, comfort and a little extra love to pēpi during those precious early days.

Ngā mihi nui to the wonderful knitters behind Beanies for Babies for the time, effort and heart you put into each item. Your mahi is truly appreciated, and we know these taonga will be warmly received by our whaiora.
