11 days, 11 events, one heck of a festival 🔥

💛🌿 Kōanga Festival 2026 brought together new works, wild performances, wānanga, comedy, music, poetry and more, celebrating the incredible creativity of Māori and Pacific artists.

🙏🏽 Ngā mihi nui to our festival partners New Zealand Opera for helping us open with Tākiritia! and to Playmarket NZ for supporting our free Te Arero Toi wānanga.

🫶🏽 He mihi aroha ki ngā kaihanga auaha who shared their mahi with us: MAJIC, Jordan Fonoti-Fuimaono, Maia Amosa, Maaka Pohatu, Rehekōrero, Tūrongo Collective, Te Whānau Āio, Tūmata Kōkiri, Horomona Horo, Regan Balzer, Jeremy Mayall, Michael Moore, Raureti Ormond, Billy Reynolds McCarthy as well as all our amazing Whānau Day performers, storytellers, musicians, DJ’s and facilitators!

✨ A special mihi to our Kōanga Playwrights Ellen-Moana Smith, Poe Tiare Tararo, Roy Iro, Maioha Allen, Reon & Huia Max Rose and Parekawa Finlay. Over the past 12 years, Kōanga has now supported 51 kaituhi Māori 🤩

💅🏽 AROHA-HA, you were iconic. Ngā mihi to Janaye Henry, Kura Forrester, Courtney Dawson, Hoani Hotene, TimProvise, Jonjon Tolovae, Ama Mosese and MC Dame Jthan for bringing the laughs in honour of our mate Aroha Awarau.

💛 And to our UPU whānau, thank you for closing the festival with such heart and brilliance. A special mihi to Maiava Nathaniel Lees, who performed in UPU for the final time.

“Me aro koe ki te hā o Hine-ahu-one”

Te Pou Theatre is excited to announce that the wāhine of KŌPŪ 💋 have been invited to perform in New York 🗽 this October as part of the Spiderwoman Theater 50th Anniversary celebrations! ❤️‍🔥✊🏽 The foremothers of Indigenous feminist theatre, Spiderwoman Theater was established in Brooklyn 1976 by Muriel Miguel and her sisters Gloria Miguel and Lisa Mayo. This trailblazing troupe was the foundational force of Indigenous theatre and q***r Indigenous voices around the world 🌏💫, inspiring artists in Turtle Island, Australia and Aotearoa to use contemporary theatre as a platform for amplifying Indigenous storytelling and advocating for Indigenous rights. Spiderwoman Theater have spread their Story Weaving theatre-making methodology around the world and this October they will weave together Global Indigenous performances in celebration of this incredible milestone. 🙏🏽 Nō mātou te whiwhi, nō mātou te waimārie! What an opening 🩸💧 Wai Tawhito is one of those experiences that must be felt to be understood. Tūrongo Collective and Te Whānau Āio took us on a journey last night where worlds collide, the old and the new, the real and the imagined, the beginning and the end of time.

Wai Tawhito is a space where all the senses are awakened, this is an immersive experience that will linger long after you leave 💫.

Last night we celebrated the Tāmaki debut of GRASS ROOTS by Raureti Dion Ormónd which was overwhelmingly popular with our audience, who were then treated to a free gig by The Grotesque right here in Te Kōpua 🎸🕺🏻🎤🥁💃🏻

We can’t wait for the next gig/pāti in the whare!
