TUVALU LANGUAGE WEEK 2026
PROGRAM & ACTIVITIES

Theme: Tuvalu cherish your foundation, and treasure your identity and language in the basket of your journey.
Muna Tuku: Tuvalu Alofa ki tou fakavae, kae teugina tou iloga mo tau ’gana I tau kete fai malaga.

PROGRAM & ACTIVITIES (Proposed)

1. Island Communities (A)

Official Opening(s): Sunday services will be held at their respective hired venues or church venues.
Activity: children and youths Sunday program in Tuvaluan – respective island communities to organize their own.

(i) The programs revolves around reviving their respective cultural traditions and heritage programs from Monday to Saturday.

(ii) Cultural revitalisations, creating space and conducive environment and practical programs within their original cultural context, involvement of their youths and children in Auckland. Activities can flexibly centre around;
 Tuvalu dialects, words pronunciations, expressions and sayings
 Tuvalu story readings, story telling and folklore etc
 Customs, traditions and cultural heritage
 Traditional dancing, songs and lyrics etc
 Traditional arts and games

(iii) Some financial support will be given to each island community to assist with their planned program activities.

(iv) Youth representatives (one from each island) will be selected to assist with sharing photographs, audio and video updates, events and contents more easily through posts and stories on the TACT Fb page, and directly with TACT management team to assist with the accountability reporting for the week's activities. The reps will be compensated (financially) for their efforts and commitment.

v) the eight (8) island communities are encouraged to engage their community members in the Tuvalu Language Week activities, as some over the past years received monies and did NOT have activities planned for the 2025 Tuvalu Language Week - which is unfair to others.

2. Island Communities (B)
Activity – Alagaa pati / Tuugamuna o fenua.

The aim is to teach youths and young the common words, phrases, including non-verbal cues that are commonly used in the Tuvalu language on normal daily conversations. These include verbal expressions, idiomatic and metaphorical expressions like “break a leg., etc” that carry cultural meanings beyonf their literal definitions. Non-verbal tones are body language, facial expressions, and vocal tines that add emotional context to what we say.
Language Expressions matter in the Tuvalu language context due to its importance towards;

 Builds connections – words allow people to form relationships, express empathy, and understand others perspective;
 Shapes thoughts;
 Transmits culture – language passes down traditions, values, and history from one generation to the next;
 Meets daily needs.

Island communities can merge this component with their activities in 1) above or, set a separate date for this.

3. Youths / Talavou o Fenua 8

Activity - Youth engagement and interactions. There is flexibility around a one-day combined sports or recreational or get-together program for all youths with a specified limited funding.
These will be decided upon consensually with all Island youth leaders in a meeting that will take place this week at the TACT office. TACT is currently engaging with all youth leaders to call a meeting to discuss this.

4. Kaulotu (8 groups)

Official Opening(s): Sunday services will be held at their respective hired venues or church venues.
Activity: children and youths Sunday program in Tuvaluan – respective churches to organize their own programs.

5. Elders Wisdom and Knowledge Sharing (ULUSINA Group)

Activity – inter-generational learning between young children and youths on Tuvalu cultural language and heritage.

The ULUSINA Group will select their date and time for the engagement with the expectation of maximising the opportunity by engaging with as many children and young people as possible to share knowledge on language, traditions, arts or stories and skills to preserve identity and strengthen community bonds.

In the past there were other activities for the whole week ranging from kids outdoor reading activities, kids library visiting, kids reading books program etc but all these have been reduced or removed due to reduced funding from the funder.

There will be key focuses on intangible heritage like languages, songs, recipes and craftmanship. Shared activities build emotional connections, reduce isolation and foster a deeper sense of belonging for both young children and our elderly community members.

IMPORTANT

There are separate budgeted allocations to assist compensate the above groups with their activities. These will be managed from the TACT office through disbursements to concerned groups.

For any enquiries that you may have on the above shared information, please feel free to discuss them with the TACT management team whose contacts are listed below;
