I was offered to tour a seaweed hatchery at Kelly Tarlton’s and so had to invite some of my impact-focused collaborators along!

After many years of wondering whether New Zealand could have commercially grown seaweed sector, I was amazed to see that how little sporelings can go a long way! If I have my numbers right that little tray can populate lines with almost 1200 kgs of seaweed!

One way to change things in the ocean is by engaging a group of amazingly motivated humans that work together to restoring our coastal areas with kelp.

The New Zealand seaweed sector is full of conservationists in lab coats and gum boots, which is what Sea Green’s wants to support with its products and programs.

Plus being surrounded by sea life and penguins can really liven up a meeting!

Meet NZ Kelp species Ecklonia Radiata-a brown seaweed from the North Island of NZ. It has been providing habitat and food for centuries for ocean fish, mammals, crustaceans and occasionally humans.

Lending umami flavour and its awesome tribe of antioxidants, minerals, and nutrients to your diet to the often betterment of gut, immune, and skin health.

It’s under threat from warming waters, invasive species, and overfishing in Aotearoa. Urchin barrens, caulerpa, and pollution mean it’s going to be harder to find edible seaweed if we don’t take action soon.

We aim to help Ecklonia thrive by working with sustainable partners to help promote this awesome species of underwater photosynthetic organism, and tell our community about its amazing benefits by selling sustainably harvested seaweed powder under the Sea Green label.

Come taste it at the Midwinter Market and Greens fundraising event at the Button Factory on the 9th of August, and perhaps meet your new favourite food plus climate solution!

A lot of people seem to doubt that soft plastics in the collection bin at Woolworths actually gets recycled, and here’s a bit of fact finding that it does.

Most of it is low density polyethylene (LDPE) and it’s very easy to melt and process. There are multiple recyclers out there using it.

Obviously, we should minimise our use of plastics first…but so much of our store-bought goods comes packed in soft plastics that it's hard to avoid.

Separating and removing it from the waste stream helps prevent it not only from ending up in landfill, but eventually going into the ocean (as many landfills may one day flood with sea level rises). So turtles and whales will thank you.

If you can collect your clean soft plastics waste (plastic bags, stretchy film, food packaging) into a stuff sack, larger bag, or separate bin, that's a good start. Once there’s enough, drop it off at your next stop into the collection bin at the store.

Remember-it is a process of transformation. You don’t need to be a perfect about it. Like a lot of behaviour shifts, once you begin, it becomes progressively more natural.

Making up your mind to take steps in the first place is a win in itself-and every small act of environmental stewardship will make you feel better too.

They are well located for collaboration in the arts, design, and community sector and we are keen to help shape an offering for sustainable ventures.

Awesome to introduce two of my favourite groups-Te Whare Tipu and The Button Community today at the community greenhouse.

No better way to orientate in community impact & social enterprise than a little heavy lifting. Leaders like Ethan at the front of the waka showing how it’s done.

Today it’s joining forces to move a seeding table, tomorrow it will move the dial for community-powered climate action in Aotearoa. Stay tuned for more.
