Sustainability in Aotearoa is being shaped by wāhine across every corner of the country. This International Women’s Day, we wanted to shine a light on their stories, their challenges, and what keeps them going.

We hope you enjoy this series! A big thank you to the women who participated in, thank you for continuing to inspire us. Visit our blog for the full interview!

Exciting news! Last month, we signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the China Environmental United Certification Centre (CEC), to strengthen knowledge sharing and sustainable trade.

It was a privilege to host the delegation for a full day in Tāmaki Makaurau as we discussed shared priorities in green procurement, sustainable production and credible environmental standards. Thank you to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs & Trade for joining us and for their exceptional hospitality.

As part of our visit, we met with long-term ecolabel partners to learn more about their sustainability story and entry into China. We also visited New Zealand Trade and Enterprise and met with industry bodies and export clients.

While our markets are very different, with their own unique challenges, we have similar goals and there’s a lot we can learn from each other. For example, the delegation was impressed by our Kiwi ingenuity and business transparency, while we took note of their highly successful green procurement policies.

We look forward to working closely with CEC and championing sustainable businesses through credible certification.

…and a partridge in a pear tree! 🌲

We’re proud of the strides we’ve made this year, from strengthening core processes to improving our standards and customer experience.

In particular, we’d like to thank the businesses that have achieved and maintained the Eco Choice Aotearoa certification. Our standards are rigorous by design, and meeting them demands time, transparency and an ongoing commitment to improvement. Your leadership not only drives change, but raises the bar for other businesses too.

To our strategic partners and audience, thank you for your continued support. We are looking forward to another year of helping Kiwis make informed choices, and helping businesses minimise their impact.

Ngā mihi nui,
The Eco Choice team 💚

Do you know what’s in your products?

Far too many everyday products contain ingredients or materials that can harm people, and inevitably, the planet.

Often it’s hidden deep in supply chains. In coatings, dyes, fillers, recycled content, or substituted raw materials that no one really checks.

The recent recall of asbestos-contaminated sand is yet another reminder of why credible standards and independent, third-party certification matter.

At Eco Choice Aotearoa, we routinely assess not only environmental and social impact, but also human health and safety. For instance:

👉 does a cleaning product contain skin irritants?
👉 would the fumes from paint affect the air your kids breathe?
👉 does your wall or ceiling insulation contain substances could cause long-term illnesses?

Our CEO Laura Gemmell spoke with RNZ Morning Report today about this issue and what parents can look out for when choosing products, particularly in the lead-up to Christmas.

No one likes being duped - or even feeling like they might have been. That’s why it’s critical claims are clear, credible, and backed by evidence, ideally verified by an independent third-party like Eco Choice Aotearoa. It can be tempting to resort to buzzwords, but when it comes to communicating sustainability, those shortcuts can cost you big.

Here are some alternatives to the usual examples of vague claims that we see on products.

There are 400 ecolabels out there. What sets our certification apart?

Our CEO Laura Gemmell explains how our product-specific standards stem from robust science that require independent third-party verification.

This rigour is what gives businesses a credible way to prove their claims and gives consumers confidence in what they buy, ensuring unmatched levels of assurance.

Happy Ecolabel Month! 🎉

This October, we’re celebrating our ecolabel, and businesses that have gone above and beyond to meet our rigorous, independent standards.

Eco Choice Aotearoa was set up more than 30 years ago to help businesses prove the environmental performance of their products with credibility.

Today, our mission is more relevant than ever, as we work with businesses to ensure a future where the planet, people and economy thrive. A future that we can be proud of.

We’ll be shining a light on certified products, leading businesses, and how Type 1 ecolabels like Eco Choice help you make better choices.

Some people say we’re a bit bonkers for giving away our IP…

…but that’s what a credible ecolabel does.

As a Type 1 ecolabel operating under ISO14024,  Eco Choice Aotearoa, publishes all of our standards openly for anyone to view or use.

Why? Because transparency doesn’t just raise the bar for individual businesses, it raises expectations across entire industries, which ultimately delivers better outcomes for people and the planet.

Transparency doesn’t have to mean handing over your secret sauce, it’s about verifying your practices and impacts. Making sure what you say lines up with what you do.

Through our Type 1 life-cycle certification, we help businesses demonstrate proof of responsible sourcing, environmental compliance, safety to human health, fitness for purpose, ethical labour and more.

While we’d love to see every business carry the ecolabel, our bigger objective is to see more businesses operating more sustainably. And that’s worth giving away trade secrets for.

When we’re not driving industry change, you’ll find us in lecture halls, sharing our mahi with future leaders. 🧑‍🏫

Last week our Sustainability Partnerships Manager, Alex Eddington, spoke with students at School of Built Environment - about how ecolabels produce positive outcomes in the building sector.

Many of the students were well aware of
in the built environment and saw immense value in third-party verification as a trusted tool.

But what got us really excited was how many were curious about career pathways in the green building sector. Big thanks to Massey and Dr Mikael Boulic for having us. Connecting with our rangatahi is always a good reminder of why we do what we do.

And the fight continues…

While we were disappointed by the Select Committee’s decision not to recommend the Right to Repair Amendment Bill, we’re not going to let it stop our progress.

If you want to see change, we highly urge you to email your MPs and ask them to support this Bill.
