As of November 1, the newly completed abattoir in Butwal sits idle, entangled in disputes between local authorities and stakeholders. With a substantial investment of 160 million from the provincial government, operational challenges persist as farmers and traders remain hesitant to engage.

During a recent program hosted by the Reporters Club Lumbini, Hari Pandit, acting secretary of the Ministry of Agriculture, Land Management, and Cooperatives of Lumbini Province emphasized the need for federal and provincial governments to provide clear directives to the Butwal Metropolitan City. Mitrmani Khanal, Chief Administrative Officer of Butwal Metropolitan City echoed this sentiment, highlighting difficulties in operation due to a lack of support for the private company managing the facility.

Stakeholders are calling for swift action to resolve these issues and unlock the abattoir’s potential.

Today, Heifer Project Nepal hosted a successful outcome sharing workshop for the GRAPE project, which focuses on building resilience among smallholder livestock farmers in Karnali and Sudurpaschim provinces. Since its launch in April 2023, this initiative has focused on empowering farmers to adopt climate-resilient and sustainable livestock farming practices. The project was co-funded by the European Union, Embassy of Finland, and is implemented by Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH.

Nepal is acutely vulnerable to climate change, with predictions indicating a 2.2% loss in GDP by 2050. The agricultural sector contributes significantly to this issue, particularly through livestock-related emissions. Despite livestock accounting for 11.5% of our GDP, productivity remains low, especially among poorer households, due to reliance on traditional methods and inadequate resources.

Today’s workshop featured distinguished attendees, including Dr. Rajendra Prasad Mishra, Secretary of Livestock Development (MoALD), and Dr. Umesh Dahal, Director General of the Department of Livestock Services, along with local leaders and our Country Director, Dr. Tirtha Raj Regmi.

We are proud to announce that the GRAPE project has successfully empowered 1,851 farmers in adopting climate-resilient practices through ongoing support and capacity building. Together, we’re working towards a more sustainable future for agriculture in Nepal!

“Previously, the crops were destroyed by monkeys, porcupines, boars and other animals. My income was just zero two years back. This year, I expect a good earning as the chili variety I’ve grown is highly demanded in the market.”- Jit Bahadur Khamcha Magar

Fast forward to today, and he’s on track to earn Rs 7,00,000 from Dalle Khursani (Red Cherry Pepper Chili) that even the monkeys avoid!🌶️

Nearly 1,500 farmers in Ribdikot Rural Municipality are benefiting from this booming crop. What started as a trial four years ago has transformed into a thriving industry, generating over Rs 60 million for Ribdikot! Farmers who once took loans to celebrate festivals are now celebrating it with confidence and no loan.

With support from Heifer International Nepal and the local government, providing training and subsidies, Dalle Khursani (Red Cherry Pepper Chili) cultivation has flourished, empowering farmers across every ward. This Dashain, our hearts are full of joy! 🤍

Thanks to the incredible dedication of the members of the Heifer-supported Shree Upahar Social Entrepreneur Women’s Cooperative, goats exported from Rambha Rural Municipality, which includes 7 cooperatives, now account for over NPR 3 crore and USD 226,000 annually. This contributes to a larger export total of approximately NPR 6 crore and USD 450,000 from 11 locations across Palpa.

The members are educating their children through the income they’ve earned through goat farming and have also exported goats to Butwal, Bhairahawa, Pokhara, and Chitwan. Businesspeople even travel to the village to buy goats from the cooperative.

This isn’t just a celebration of a festival; it’s a heartfelt tribute to hope and prosperity for our families. Here’s to our cherished traditions, the strength of our community, and the shared success that unites us all!
