For Heifer, Locally Led Development (LLD) is about empowering local communities to carve out their own paths to progress. We trust in their ability to know what's best for themselves, and in return, they trust us to help build their confidence in their own judgment, abilities, and collective strength. ♻️
We consider LLD becomes SLLD when communities are enabled to strengthen their social, economic and environmental resilience, such that gains made through locally led development are sustainable over the long term.
Heifer is relatively early in a learning process about the full dynamics of SLLD and how to fully implement it. As such, we will continue to refine and update our definition as we progress in our learning!💚

History
World Environment Day, led by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), has been held annually on June 5 since 1973. It is the largest global platform for environmental public outreach, celebrated by millions of people across the world. This year, the event will focus on land restoration, halting desertification, and building drought resilience under the slogan “Our land. Our future. We are #GenerationRestoration.🌎
Why Celebrate it?
As part of the environment, it is our responsibility to conserve it. Ecosystems around the world are under threat, with nature currently in emergency mode, and time running out. Immediate action is needed. According to the UN, we must halve our annual greenhouse gas emissions by 2030 to keep global warming below 1.5°C this century. Without urgent action, droughts may affect over three-quarters of the world’s population by 2050, exposure to air pollution beyond safe guidelines will increase by 50% within the decade, and plastic waste flowing into aquatic ecosystems will nearly triple by 2040. 🚯
Heifer’s Initiative:
Through initiatives like Climate Smart Agriculture, Heifer implements practices such as improved sheds, manure management, enhanced animal health, vaccination, breed improvement, and the use of cultivated fodder/forage and crop residues-based feeds. These initiatives enable efficient, climate-smart, and resilient livestock production systems. 🌞🌾
Heifer also conducts rigorous research on feeding management experiments and efficient animal waste recycling methods, promoting these evidence-based practices for projects like Climate Smart Dairy Farming. By doing so, Heifer encourages communities to adopt agricultural and livestock management techniques that protect the environment and natural resources, reduce emissions, and benefit farmers. Heifer’s goals and cornerstones also include caring for the earth, climate action, and sustainable development. ♻

This year’s theme celebrates the vital role dairy plays in delivering quality nutrition to nourish the world.
Why celebrate it?
Milk isn't just a beverage, it's a nutritional powerhouse packed with essential vitamins and minerals for our well-being. Beyond its nutritional value, milk also plays a significant role in revitalizing rural economies, offering sustainable livelihoods for smallholder farmers, and fostering community prosperity. With over one billion people relying on the dairy sector for their livelihoods and approximately 240 million individuals employed in the dairy sector directly or indirectly, celebrating World Milk Day means honoring the hard work of farmers, the resilience of rural communities, the essential role milk plays in nourishing our bodies, and supporting economies worldwide. 🌍🥛
Heifer’s Initiative:
With active projects like the Milky Way, a joint initiative of the governments of Nepal, South Korea, and Heifer International, Heifer is working to transform the dairy sector of Nepal sustainably through genetic improvement of cattle and the creation of a vertically integrated dairy value chain.
