🚨 Climate warming set off Nepal disaster: Report

🏔️ Yakthung ( ) communities affected by ’s cable car project have urged the IFC - International Finance Corporation ( ) Board of Directors to question the IFC’s involvement and handling of its advisory services in the controversial project.

📄 The letter follows the closure of investigation into the communities’ complaint by the Compliance Advisor Ombudsman (CAO) ( ) - the IFC’s accountability mechanism.

IFC - the private lending arm of the World Bank Group ( ) - has stated that the Cable Car was never an IFC project or sub-project and that it had no relationship with the project’s developer or operator.

Yet IFC’s own records show that Pathivara was added to the advisory engagement with , which is owned by the Chairman of the IME Group (one of the largest Nepali conglomerates), at the company’s request. IFC subsequently carried out environmental and social screening and commissioned a technical study specifically for the Pathivara Cable Car.

The CAO appraisal also identified preliminary indications of potential harm and potential IFC non-compliance with its Access to Information Policy. The advisory project was publicly disclosed only after 670 days, despite the policy requiring disclosure within 60 days.

The complainants are now asking the IFC Board to look more closely at IFC’s account of its involvement, its disclosure practices, and the work it carried out on Pathivara.

The CAO case may be closed, but questions about IFC’s involvement, transparency and accountability remain.

📌 Flood risks to Nepal hydropower project were known – but banks ignored them

🧐 A recent article by Scroll examines the devastating floods that affected hydropower projects in Nepal’s Trishuli River valley and raises serious questions about whether climate and disaster risks were adequately assessed before these projects were financed and developed.

📣 As highlighted in the article, Shakya Prabin, Founder/Director of CEMSOJ, said: "

📌 “Climate impact assessment should have been a major consideration, because this is not the first time we have seen floods here.”
📌“We had a glacial lake outburst last year too.”

📌Additionally, he suggested that smaller and medium-scale hydroprojects could be less risky.
📌“In our work we have been piloting and supporting through financial and technical assistance for community-led micro hydroprojects less than 20KW”
📌"Such decentralised small and medium level projects - can be a more environmentally and socially viable option rather than a cascade of large scale dams”.

🚨 IPRI condemns coercive land acquisition practices affecting Indigenous Newa communities in

📍Indigenous Peoples Rights International (IPRI) expresses deep concern over land expropriation measures for the Kathmandu-Tarai/Madhesh Fast Track affecting the Indigenous Newa communities of Khokana and Bungamati without their Free, Prior and Informed Consent ( ).

❗The project would affect around 15,000 people and cross ancestral lands, agricultural areas, ritual routes, and sacred sites.

➡️On June 18, 2026, the Government warned that forced land expropriation would proceed if residents did not accept compensation. Residents later filed a petition before Nepal’s Supreme Court to protect their rights.

📢 IPRI calls on the Government of Nepal to suspend land expropriation, avoid pressure or intimidation, guarantee Free, Prior and Informed Consent, consider alternative routes, and protect Newa ancestral lands, cultural heritage, and livelihoods.

✋🏾The situation in Khokana and Bungamati shows that infrastructure development must respect Indigenous Peoples’ rights, territories, and future.
