Trauma Caused by Domestic Abuse
Domestic abuse is not always defined by physical violence.
Coercive control can gradually affect a person’s autonomy, sense of safety and the choices they feel able to make.
It may involve isolation, intimidation, monitoring, financial control, threats or restrictions on independence. Over time, these experiences can affect trust, relationships, decision making and a person’s understanding of what feels safe or possible.
For professionals, recognising these dynamics is important.
What may appear from the outside to be a straightforward choice may instead be shaped by fear, dependency, trauma and an ongoing imbalance of power.
On 23 October, internationally recognised trauma author and trainer Christiane Sanderson returns to Malta for Power, Control & Trauma: Recognising and Responding to Intimate Partner Violence and Interpersonal Trauma.
The full day masterclass will explore domestic abuse, coercive control and interpersonal trauma, helping professionals deepen their understanding of the experiences and responses they may encounter in practice.
