Mission Statement

"To Create a National Awareness about the socio-economic benefits of tourism for Malta and Gozo and to work with regional and international networks to enhance the Euro-Med Product in a sustainable manner." The Soċjeta Turistika Maltija (Malta Tourism Society) was founded in 2002 with the aim of providing a forum for professionals working in, studying or otherwise interested i

n tourism across all its sectors. In contrast to other tourism associations, the Society aims to attract members from a diversity of sectors since the Society believes that to improve the tourism sector a forum whereby all stakeholders meet and discuss relevant issues is important. Membership is open to people working in every sector of the industry - public, private or voluntary - and to those well-established in their career path as well as those starting out on a travel or tourism course at college or university.

The project that is developing the new sense of quality and sustainable tourism to mature destinations like Malta and Gozo continues after a continuous period period of 17 years. The Malta Tourism Society continues to build on the success of the past - both in academic papers and books and practical examples in Mqabba and Safi. Thanks to the hundreds of intern students from the University of Florence and Joe Abdilla.

Now thanks to Carmel, Adnan and Wyem we will start to work on promoting and hosting these community based tours in Lija. For enquiries where and how to book the tours to Lija call Dr Julian Zarb on 00356 99039985.

Press Statement - Malta Tourism Society 11 th August 2026

Prof George Cassar (Vice Chair)

The Malta Tourism Society (MTS) would like to express its concern regarding the over-development and the destruction of the natural environment on Comino. We believe that this island must be protected and that responsibility falls on us as the present guardians to take care of Comino to ensure that it is passed on in a pristine state to future generations of Maltese and Gozitans who continue to consider the Maltese islands as their home. The project being proposed for the further development of Comino – a Natura 2000 protected island – will lead to the further destruction of our natural and cultural environment, geological heritage and biodiversity.

The MTS calls on all Members of Parliament and NGOs to join forces in a collective effort to halt this destructive development on Comino as this challenges the sustainable policies as declared by international organizations such as the UN Tourism and the World Travel and Tourism Council.

Furthermore, MTS exhorts all Members of Parliament and NGOs to understand and accept that the time has come to adopt an integrated approach to managing and maintaining a serious carrying capacity exercise by setting up an Authority that will ensure a balance between resources, infrastructure, quality of life and communities. This Authority should work on the same procedures as the Calvean model that brings stakeholders together for the national and international benefit.

The Malta Tourism Society strongly supports initiatives such as the establishment of carrying capacity Authority, and will continue to monitor projects related to tourism to ensure that these are sustainable, and in the interests of both the local community and of visitors of quality who genuinely appreciate and respect their destinations of choice.
