💔 A few days ago, while many of us were enjoying Santa Maria Saturday, we read the news of yet another case of femicide...

🥀 Although we don't know much about Charlotte, what she used to do in her life, what she liked and what made her happy, we know that she was a woman, who like others before her, became a victim of violence. We know that she was a Maltese woman who grew up in Xgħajra. She was a mother, a sister and a daughter. She was the school mate, friend or relative of people who loved her and who will never see her again.

⚖️ This disgraceful femicide wasn't an isolated incident. Charlotte had reported her alleged killer to the police before and he was also imprisoned some years ago.

Perhaps this time she did not ask for help.
Perhaps this time she hoped that things would be different.
Perhaps she didn't think that the police and the court would take her seriously this time, considering that the second time she reported him, the accusations were rejected, and nothing happened.
Perhaps she minimised the danger she was in, hoping that the threats will not be carried out.
Perhaps she was aware that other women failed to receive the protection they deserved, even after reporting their violent partner more than once. ...

⚫ Regardless of the details of this case, we cannot suppress our anger and rage after losing yet another woman who should be alive today. There urgently needs to be a serious effort at prevention and awareness about patriarchal violence and violence within intimate couple relationships which has just left another victim.

🪧 Moviment Graffitti is once again sounding its voice loudly, asking for incremented educational and public awareness programmes about consent, toxic masculinity and patriarchal structures, to steadily eradicate femicide and all forms of gender-based violence from our society.

When will this issue be taken seriously?

💜 Charlotte, you won't be forgotten. Your name will be remembered and shouted out loud.

The killing of Charlotte Zammit has once again brought the issue of femicide and violence against women into the national spotlight.

However, her case is far from an isolated one. Over the decades, dozens of women in Malta and Gozo have been murdered by partners, former partners, relatives and other people known to them.

This list serves as a sobering reminder of the women who lost their lives to domestic violence, gender-based violence and other acts of brutality at the hands of those closest to them.
