She was my best companion for almost 16 years. It's hard to believe that she's no longer following me around. Hug and kiss her ashes....that's what is left of her.

I am a once weekly volunteer at the sanctuary. I lost my pet cat Shiloh last year and like everyone who goes through this trauma, was devastated. I was relieved, however, that I could trust the sanctuary with cremating my beloved pet. We would like to express our heartfelt and deepest gratitude for taking such great care of the cremation of our beloved Leo.

When we came to collect him, your kindness, compassion, and genuine sensitivity touched us profoundly. In such an incredibly delicate and emotional moment for me and my family, your support meant more than words can truly express. You made a very difficult experience a little more bearable, and we will never forget that.

Losing a pet who is a big part of your family is never easy 💔
We lost two of our adored dogs a few years apart and each time we were heartbroken 💔

The Island Sanctuary Pet Cremation Service offered such a truly humane and caring service. They treated everything with compassion and empathy. Having Maya and Sheba’s ashes back home with me brings a great sense of comfort. I’m deeply grateful for everything you do. Thank you xx

Our first message is from Jessica, who also commented about the 'poem' we include with our receipt. Thank you Jessica - Caqqi was 1 of the lucky ones - beloved and cared for till the end.

Hi 😊 Yesterday I collected the ashes of my dear dog and life companion, Ċaqqi. I just wanted to say that the message you included truly touched me. Ċaqqi was a rescue pointer, so I felt every word of it. She came into my life at exactly the right time, and the bond we shared was incredibly special. I’ve always said she is the dog of my life. Your message gave me comfort, and I hope that one day I’ll be able to open my heart again in the way it describes.
Thank you for handling the cremation with such sensitivity and care—it meant a lot during a very difficult moment. And thank you for all the work you do for dogs who need it most.

Running a sanctuary - especially one like ours - is a lot of hard work - (especially beause of the lack of volunteers). But it's also very satisfying - every dog rescued, every home found -is cause for rejoicing.
Running our cremation service, however is probably the hardest task we face - emotionally draining for animal lovers who have all known multiple losses over the years, and can totally emphatise with grieving owners. We are not doing it for praise or for money (since that actually funds the Island Sanctuary) but as a service to the pets who share our lives - and those who consider them a part of their family and feel their loss as we do.

This is the official page for Pet Cremation in Malta. The Island Sanctuary at Marsaxlokk is licensed for providing Pet Cremation Service and has been providing this service since 2018. We are proud to be the first Animal Crematorium on the island - it was started in response to a need - not as a business venture. Our small dedicated team of volunteers offer a service that is both compassionate and professional. One that is rooted in our own passion for animals, and the real grief we experience on their loss.

Just to clear up things.....

No doubt many of you have seen the hundreds of comments about the cremation service we offer. Thank you to those of you who have basically stuck up for us . In the past 7 years we have cremated well over a thousand deceased pets - and in the process helped their grieving families during a very tough time. It's not possible for us to answer every comment/criticism, but one particular comment stood out - and it would have been criminal not to answer. Below is the original comment by John Sellier who was replying to Moira Farrugia, and our reply:

Moira Farrugia Island Sanctuary DO NOT have a crematorium but an incinerator which is a totally different thing. Crematoria burn loved ones humanely, incinerators just burn things. I am positive that you are capable of making the distinction.

John Sellier - get your facts right! Wasteserve has an incinerator in Marsa - and if you send your deceased pet there it will be burnt with all the other rubbish. Island Sanctuary has a crematorium - which includes 2 incinerators. We have invested heavily in what we consider a service - not a business. Our office serves as a reception for both pets and grieving owners. We have the facility - and equipment - to grind the cremated bones, which we actually return to the pet owners in custom made velvet bags. Since we were asked for urns, we also bought a selection of urns in different styles and prices. But this is NOT a business venture - it was an answer to a very real need, and has always been run by volunteers. I invite you to have a look at our Fb page for more details:
