An Unexpected Beautiful Experience at 'Notre Dame Bonsai Garden' during the 33rd Annual Bonsai Exhibition 2026.

On Saturday and Sunday, an unusual large number of butterflies were seen fluttering around in our garden and were feeding on the Lantana flowers.

The Maltese Islands have been reported to have experienced one of the most impressive Painted Lady butterfly migrations seen in recent years.

'The Painted Lady butterfly (Farfett tax-Xewk), scientifically known as Vanessa cardui, is one of the world’s most extraordinary migratory insects, travelling thousands of kilometres between Africa and Europe over successive generations.'

While these migrations occur almost every year, this season stood out because of the sheer number of butterflies being recorded across Malta, Gozo and Comino.

Sunday Workshop by Ignazio Giambrone

On Sunday, 7th June, Ignazio Giambrone conducted a workshop from 9:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. During the session, members brought along some of their pre-bonsai material for evaluation and development.

After carefully studying each tree, Ignazio worked on them individually, carrying out pruning—sometimes quite drastic—along with wiring, changing fronts, and adjusting inclinations. Through these interventions, he helped transform the material and set it on a clearer path towards becoming refined bonsai.

Participants once again had the opportunity to admire Ignazio’s remarkable speed of ex*****on, technical expertise, and ability to envision the future potential of each tree. His guidance and foresight provided invaluable insights into the artistic and horticultural processes involved in bonsai development.
