UNHCR has recently published a report highlighting the human cost of a “sustained and worsening funding shortfall” and its impact on the Agency’s ability to protect and assist refugees.

The consequences described in the report resonate with organisations working with refugees and asylum seekers much closer to home, including JRS Malta.

JRS Malta Advocacy Coordinator Beth Cachia, who convenes the forum, spoke of the challenges asylum seekers face as they try to “navigate a system that does not work with them in mind.”

She said vulnerable individuals such as asylum seekers are often impeded by documentation barriers and complication eligibility criteria to access services, as well as facing cultural and language challenges.

This time last year we launched our first 2D video production, in collaboration with Filfla Studios - Paper Ghosts. The story of Karim and Maria was based on a JRS Malta publication, Forced to Hide, a report which uncovers shocking levels of exploitation and mistreatment among migrant workers in Malta.

The project was supported by the Platform for International Cooperation on Undocumented Migrants (PICUM) and the Robert Bosch Stiftung's grant programme on labour rights and labour migration.

This year, on the 112th World Day for Migrants and Refugees, Pope Leo XIV calls on us all to remember the suffering of migrant and refugee children, especially those travelling alone. At JRS, the cornerstone of our work with young people is that these children are children before they are “migrants”.

Children with hopes, fears and dreams. We provide services that aim to take them beyond the trauma of long and dangerous journeys, detention and being stuck in legal limbo; walking with them to pursue educational goals and dreams, and most importantly offering a safe space for children and teenagers to just be themselves and have fun. This is the message by His Holiness Pope Leo XIV for the 112th World Day of Migrants and Refugees🙏
