Our Chairman Julie Rusher was one of the winners of the Nazzareno Vassallo Award. Well done Julie 👏

Meet the sixth nominee for the Nazzareno Vassallo Award 2026.

As President of the British Residents Association, Julie Amanda Rusher organises activities for older British and Maltese persons in St Paul's Bay and Mellieħa. From a library and newsletter to a supper club and craft club, she helps those who live alone to meet others. She also makes sure members are supported in difficult times, fostering a strong sense of community and friendship.

The awards ceremony will take place on October 21st, at Sant’Anton Palace under the patronage of H.E. Myriam Spiteri Debono, President of Malta.

The event will be streamed live on the day, on CareMalta's page! So stay tuned!

🧸📚 A Very Happy 100th Birthday to Winnie-the-Pooh! 🍯🎉

What a wonderful way to celebrate one of Britain's most beloved bears!

To mark 100 years of Winnie-the-Pooh, a lovely initiative is bringing free books to 150 of Britain's iconic red telephone box libraries. ❤️📚

Here at the British Residents' Association Library in St Paul's Bay, Malta, we absolutely love seeing initiatives that encourage reading, bring communities together and give books the opportunity to be enjoyed by more people.

And of course, our very own Teddy Tales is delighted to see another famous bear making headlines! 🧸🍯

Who remembers reading Winnie-the-Pooh as a child? Or perhaps you've shared his adventures with your children or grandchildren?

💬 We'd love to hear your favourite Winnie-the-Pooh memories!

📚 Remembering Jeffrey Archer

We were saddened to hear of the passing of bestselling author Jeffrey Archer, aged 86.

Jeffrey Archer has long been a firm favourite with readers at our library. His books regularly find their way off our shelves and into new homes, with titles such as Kane and Abel, Not a Penny More, Not a Penny Less and the Clifton Chronicles continuing to be enjoyed by our members.

Over a remarkable writing career spanning five decades, his books sold more than 300 million copies around the world.

Poignantly, his final novel, Adam and Eve, is being published today — just one day after his death.

A true storyteller whose books have kept generations of readers turning the pages. His stories will certainly continue to be read and enjoyed here at the BRA Library for many years to come.

📖 Rest in peace, Jeffrey Archer.

We rehomed 235 books in September.

📚 That's nearly 8 books rehomed every single day during September.

📖 Roughly 68,000–70,000 pages of reading found new homes.

🔤 Those books could contain around 18.8 million words.

⏰ At an average reading pace, that's around 1,250 hours of reading — or more than 52 days of continuous reading!

🌱 Most importantly, that's 235 pre-loved books being reused rather than needing to be bought new or potentially discarded.

📚 Remembering Peter May (1951–2026)

We were very sad to hear of the death of Scottish author Peter May, aged 74.

A much-loved name in crime fiction, Peter May was perhaps best known for his atmospheric Lewis Trilogy – The Blackhouse, The Lewis Man and The Chessmen – set against the dramatic landscape of the Outer Hebrides.

Over his long career, his novels took readers from the Isle of Lewis to China and France, with series including the China Thrillers and Enzo Files. His books sold millions of copies around the world and earned him a devoted following of readers.

There is something particularly poignant about knowing that his final novel, Island of the Dead, will be published posthumously in January 2027.

Authors may leave us, but their stories remain on our bookshelves, waiting to be discovered by another reader. ❤️📖

If you’ve read Peter May, which of his books was your favourite?

And next time you visit the library, keep an eye on our shelves – you may just find a Peter May waiting to go home with you.

Rest in peace, Peter May. Thank you for the stories. 🕯️
