Maji Zima

Maji Zima Clean water not only saves lives, but it can change lives, by changing the way people live and what they can do.

The Aquafilter is a UK designed microfilter developed in North East England to treat contaminated water direct from rivers, wells, ponds, lakes and other local water storage areas. It is simple to use, light but strong, and the water is pumped by hand so there is no need for a power supply. It currently provides clean water to families and communities living in areas of the world where water is unsafe to drink.

We strongly believe in the importance of; education and training; the protection and preservation of health and the relief of poverty, sickness and distress across developing countries and this is fundamental to the values of our organisation. We aim to:

· Develop the capacity and skills of members of economically disadvantaged communities in Kenya by providing employment opportunities connected with the development, assembly, distribution and maintenance of water filters producing drinkable water from contaminated sources.

· Promote good health and prevent sickness through the development and distribution of the water filters to poor communities in Africa and other parts of the world where communities do not have access to clean water.

· Improve knowledge about water borne diseases and health amongst poor communities in Africa and other parts of the world by training people in those communities in the use of water filters.

General information

The Facts -A person needs 20 – 50 litres of water per day for basic needs. -41% of Kenya’s population are without access to safe drinking water: it is unfairly distributed with priority given to planned urban areas that can pay for water services, so those in slums and remote villages often go without this important commodity. -Over 10,000 children die every year from diarrhea caused by unsafe water and poor sanitation in Kenya. -Globally, diarrhoea is the leading cause of illness and death, and 88% of those deaths are due to an inadequate supply of water for hygiene and drinking purposes.
