The Minimum Initial Service Package (MISP) is how we make sure services are in place when they’re needed most. The MISP is the lifesaving starting point: preventing sexual violence, reducing HIV transmission, preventing maternal and newborn deaths, and making sure contraception and safe care are available.

It has been one year since .
Three months after it hit, we were in Pointe, Hanover with the , Councillor Andria Dehaney Grant and the , bringing GBV support and SRH care to women and girls facing a second crisis.

That’s what all hands on deck looks like: government, politicians, faith leaders and frontline teams pulling in the same direction.

Still true today: emergencies don’t pause gender inequality.

Protecting the sexual and reproductive health and rights of women and girls depends on the strength of the organisations that serve them.

UNFPA’s newly appointed Subregional Director for the Caribbean, Ms. Beatrice Mutali, joined partners in Saint Vincent and the Grenadines on October 19-20 for training on Capacity Strengthening and Organisational Sustainability.

Police officers, nurses, the judiciary, civil society and representatives from Planned Parenthood Association built skills in communications and youth engagement. This ensures more people, especially young people, can access the sexual and reproductive health services and protection from gender-based violence they deserve.

The event was held under the Build Back Equal (BBE) project, funded by Canada’s International Development – Global Affairs Canada and jointly implemented by UN Women Caribbean and UNFPA.

🌪️ One year ago, hit Jamaica. It damaged health facilities, displaced families and put women and girls at heightened risk.

One year later, look at what we’ve built together.

“It helps. It really does.” That’s what one mother told us about the Women and Girls Safe Space she can now access. Swipe to see what recovery looks like when dignity leads. 👉🏽

🏥 Midwives delivered babies at Cornwall Regional and St. Ann’s Bay Hospital while the storm raged. Because labour didn't pause for the hurricane, and neither did they.

🤝🏽 Safe spaces opened in Clarks Town and Savanna-la-Mar, offering trauma-informed care, psychosocial support and a place to breathe, to be heard and to begin healing.

📦 Hygiene and dignity kits, with Heart to Heart International, reached women, girls, men and boys across the island.

⚕️ Reproductive health kits and equipment were handed over to the Ministry of Health and Wellness and the Bureau of Gender Affairs, with PAHO, so services could get back on their feet.

📣 Frontline responders were trained and referral systems built, because emergencies don’t pause gender-based violence. They amplify it.

All of this was possible with the Bureau of Gender Affairs Jamaica, Ministry of Health & Wellness, Jamaica, PAHO Caribbean, Eve for Life, Caribbean Technical Assistance & Education Centre for Health - CTECH, Wellness in Motion, the Midwives Association of Jamaica, Heart to Heart International, Jamaica Constabulary Force and the communities who showed up for one another.

The storm bent us but it did not break us. 🇯🇲

The recovery isn’t finished, and neither is our commitment to Sexual and reproductive health services, ending violence and harmful gender norms and humanitarian support in Jamaica.

Across Suriname, the adolescent fertility rate is about 54 births per 1,000 girls aged 15-19, climbing even higher in some hinterland communities, among Indigenous and Tribal (Maroon) girls.

That was one of the reasons behind our recent visit to Powakka and Brownsweg in Suriname.

UNFPA, together with Canada’s International Development – Global Affairs Canada under the APP Project and Medical Mission, visited health facilities to listen to providers and community stakeholders about what is working and what is still out of reach: contraception, adolescent pregnancy prevention, support for survivors of sexual and gender-based violence, and life skills and sexual and reproductive health information for young people.

What we heard points to clear next steps: stronger training for healthcare providers, easier access to information and services, and deeper community engagement in adolescent health.

Because where a girl is born should never decide what her future looks like. 💙

PAHO reports that breast cancer is among the most common cancers in women in the Americas, with more than 462,000 women diagnosed and approximately 100,000 women die from breast cancer every year.

Awareness and early action save lives. Yet, stigma can prevent women from getting screened.

A safe space where adolescents can seek medical care from professionals who communicate with them effectively!

This is the main goal of the workshop hosted from October 21 to 22, 2026: ‘Capacity Building Workshop for Training of Trainers on Adolescent-Friendly Health Services: Applying the Barbados National Standards for Quality Health-Care Services for Adolescents.’

Minister of Health and Wellness, Senator the Hon. Lisa Cummins addressed the opening session, along with Director UNFPA Caribbean, Ms. Beatrice Mutali and Dr. Solange Kobi-Jackson, Advisor, Community Health and Life Course for Primary Health Care (PHC), PAHO Office for Barbados and the Eastern Caribbean Countries (ECC).

The workshop was jointly facilitated by UNFPA's SRH Specialist Dr. Michael Atim and Dr. Solange Kobi-Jackson.
