Unicef Jamaica

Unicef Jamaica We support government & NGO partners to promote & fulfil the rights of children. UNICEF first established an office in Jamaica in 1977.

Our mandate is to support the Government in meeting its commitment to fulfil the rights of Jamaican children – as enshrined in the Convention on the Rights of the Child – and in achieving national goals for development under Vision 2030. UNICEF does this by working with a wide range of government and non-governmental partners to improve the quality and accessibility of essential services for child

ren, the design of policies and laws intended to protect children’s rights, and the use of research and data that serves children. Every five years, UNICEF and the Government of Jamaica enter a programme of cooperation based on a thorough situation analysis of the major issues affecting children and their families. UNICEF provides both technical expertise and financial support to our partners based on this agreement. Under the current 2017-2021 Country Programme, UNICEF has sharpened its focus on reaching the most vulnerable children, through four main areas:

- Safety and Justice
- Health Promotion
- Lifelong Learning
- Social Inclusion for Children

The Country Programme document is guided by the country’s national development priorities (Vision 2030 and the associated medium-term socioeconomic policy framework 2015-2018) and the Small Island Developing States Accelerated Modalities of Action (SAMOA) Pathway. The programme contributes to the results of the United Nations Multi-Country Sustainable Development Framework for the seventeen English- and Dutch-speaking countries and territories in the Caribbean.

The climate crisis is a child rights crisis.

UNICEF has launched its Children’s Climate Risk Report 2026, revealing a stark reality:

Almost every child in the world is now exposed to at least one climate hazard, from floods and droughts to extreme heat and storms.

Even more alarming, nearly half of the world’s children (1.1 billion) face three or more overlapping climate threats, with some exposed to as many as six.

These compounding shocks are not just environmental, they are reshaping children’s lives, putting their health, education, and survival at risk.

Now is the time for action, to protect critical services, strengthen resilience, and put children at the centre of climate responses.

Recently in Roehampton, Montego Bay, close to 60 mothers and families gathered at the SDA Church to receive more than just packages - they received hope.

With UK support, they are among dozens of families with young children across affected parishes, who are accessing nutrition packages, water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) kits, breastfeeding guidance, hygiene sensitization, and mental health support.

These integrated sessions, implemented by UNICEF and the Adventist Development and Relief Agency (ADRA), are helping mothers nurture healthier, stronger futures for their little ones.

Thank you UK in Jamaica - British High Commission in Kingston and for standing with communities post and investing in resilience, even as the nation prepares for the new hurricane season.

On June 11 we celebrated the International Day of Play, a reminder that every child has the right to learn, grow, and simply be a child.

It is no coincidence that on June 12, we observe the World Day Against Child Labour - a clear declaration that children belong in classrooms and playgrounds, not in fields and factories.

Take a look at the highlights and the joy children experience through learning and games.

Shout out to and for protecting play and protecting childhood. 🙌🏾

12/06/2026

✏️ A child’s hands should be holding a pencil, not a shovel. 🪏

Childhood is meant for growth, play, and learning, not labour.

🛑 On World Day Against Child Labour, we’re showing the red card to child labour, because every child deserves a fair chance at a brighter future.

Let’s stand together for fair play for children and decent work for adults, ensuring every child can learn, dream, and thrive.
