Did you know that JDC covered the transportation and support of around 200 Polish Jewish refugees who were evacuated from Lisbon to British-controlled Jamaica in 1942? By 1944, most would immigrate to Cuba, Canada, the U.S., and other countries.

Legacies endure through the people who carry them forward. 💙

The JDC Entwine Ralph I. Goldman (RIG) Fellowship is JDC’s premier leadership opportunity, awarded to one emerging leader each year. Recently, our 2026 Fellow, Hillel Debow, had the unique opportunity to meet Judy Goldman, the daughter of Ralph Goldman, whose name and legacy inspire the Fellowship.

Ralph Goldman — JDC’s Honorary Executive Vice President — helped build the State of Israel and dedicated his life to strengthening Jewish communities around the world. His vision and leadership continue to shape Jewish life today.

Over coffee in Israel, Hillel and Judy spoke not only about Ralph’s remarkable professional accomplishments, but also about the person behind them. Judy shared how Ralph could connect with anyone, how his background as a social worker informed his leadership, and how deeply Jewish identity and communal responsibility were woven into every aspect of his life.

Hillel left the conversation even more inspired by Ralph’s legacy and grateful to be part of a Fellowship connected to his name.

Throughout , we'll be sharing a daily photo gallery highlighting the lives, courage, and resilience of refugees in different communities around the world where JDC has worked. Each day, we'll feature a new country or city, offering a glimpse into refugee life through powerful images and stories from the field. Follow along as we explore these journeys and the communities that have shaped them.

Today we are exploring Tangier: https://archives.jdc.org/project/nicolas-muller-refugees-in-morocco-1940s/

Through the Comité d’Assistance aux Réfugié s, JDC-sponsored relief activities in Tangier at the end of World War II. Assistance included small business loans, feeding programs, medical care, and the distribution of clothing and Passover matzah.

Antisemitism is rising across Europe, especially in Amsterdam, where Achira Beck — co-president of the Dutch Union of Jewish Students (DUJS) — has experienced it firsthand. In his role at DUJS, Beck, 28, helps lead the charge against the tide of hate sweeping his city.

In our latest JDC Voices blog post, he paints a detailed picture of what antisemitism looks like today and how JDC empowers him and other young Jewish leaders to deal with its consequences.

Shabbat Shalom from the JDC-supported Hesed social welfare center (Еврейский центр "Хэсэд") in Tiraspol, Moldova, where volunteers baked challahs and delivered them to elderly Jews.

Every gathering is about more than baking — it’s also about warm conversations, smiles, words of gratitude, and even expert advice from older community members on how to braid the challah.

It was wonderful meeting with Jewish Cleveland earlier this month to share how JDC serves as the Jewish response to humanitarian challenges around the world.

Together, we discussed JDC’s nonsectarian disaster relief and international development work, including in Ethiopia, where the Rick Hodes Spine Clinic in Addis Ababa provides life-changing care for people with severe spinal conditions, and our TENA program in Gondar brings healthcare to the most at-risk.

Joining JDC professionals on the visit was Billy Goldberg, a JDC Board Member for more than six years and a Cleveland native.

He told the Cleveland Jewish News: “As someone who was born and raised in Cleveland, it’s especially meaningful for me because I grew up in a community that is so rooted in the ideas of giving back, shared responsibility, and tikkun olam…It’s an honor to be a part of JDC and to get to share it with the Cleveland community.”

Thank you to the Jewish Federation of Cleveland for the opportunity to connect and highlight the impact we can make together around the world.

JDC Entwine Insider Trips provide unparalleled access to Jewish communities around the world, and we’re proud to design specific trips to uplift LGBTQ+ stories.

Last fall, a group of young Jews traveled to Prague and Berlin, where they not only immersed themselves in the local Jewish communities, but also explored the q***r stories and histories behind them. Their experience included Shabbat dinners with young q***r Jews, q***r walking tours, and learning about q***r resistance under the N***s.

Learn more about the intersection of Judaism and q***rness by tuning in to our Instagram Live on Thursday, June 18th at 12 P.M. EDT with Andrew Belinfante, senior director of programs and organizational development at JDC Entwine. Follow us on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/jdcjoint/

When we work together, we can build stronger, more connected, and sustainable Jewish communities.

Last month, the Board of the JDC-supported KEDEM Jacobs JCC in Chișinău visited Budapest for an intensive study experience with the JDC-supported JCC Budapest - Bálint Ház and a wide network of partner organizations.

More than a visit, the program offered meaningful peer exchange and deep dives into leadership, governance, and community-building — while also fostering strong collaboration and lasting connections across communities.

Last year, the Jews of Manchester, UK, endured a catastrophic Yom Kippur attack that upended their sense of safety. Marc Levy was right at the epicenter of this horrific event.

As Chief Executive of the Jewish Representative Council of Greater Manchester & Region (JRCGMR), Levy helps strengthen Jewish life across one of England’s largest cities and beyond. On that awful day, he and his team jumped into action, fielding calls, delivering support, and ensuring that Jews in need were cared for.

It was in this context that Levy recently attended the 6th Summit of European Jewish Leaders in Athens, Greece — a partnership between JDC and the ECJC - European Council of Jewish Communities. There, Levy found a network of Jewish changemakers with whom he exchanged knowledge, discussed common issues, and charted a more hopeful path forward.

In our latest JDC Voices blog post, he opens up about the attacks and what made the conference so invaluable. Read here: https://bit.ly/4vymhaf

Shabbat Shalom!

As we mark International Day of Families, we want to share one meaningful program developed by the JDC-supported Hesed Hana social service center in Kryvyi Rih, Ukraine!

About twice a month, the Hesed hosts family Shabbat celebrations — and this one, centered on Jewish family stories, was especially impactful. About 35 local Jews came together to share childhood memories, the games they loved, how they spent their days growing up, and the traditions that shaped their families.

“This Friday, it felt like Shabbat from generation to generation — warm and cozy,” one participant said. “We lit candles and talked about how each family in the community is unique, yet there are many things that unite us. We all belong to a large and friendly family."

Across the former Soviet Union and all around the Jewish world, JDC is committed to cultivating the Jewish future. Learn more about that global work here: https://bit.ly/42WiZlb
