🔬 The expert consultation period on draft IPPC diagnostic protocols is now open!

Diagnostic protocols help national plant protection organizations detect and identify regulated pests accurately and consistently. This ensures reliable results across countries and laboratories. Experts are invited to review and comment on three draft protocols:

🔹 Tephritidae: molecular identification of immature stages of fruit flies of economic importance to genus (2006-028)

🔹 Psyllid vectors of Candidatus Liberibacter solanacearum (2018-030)

🔹 Tomato brown rugose fruit virus (2021-025)

A plant pest outbreak. Decisions to make. How would you respond? 💻

At the World Food Forum, students and teachers tried the IPPC’s online simulation, exploring how to prevent, prepare for and respond to plant pest outbreaks.

Joining them was the Plant Health Campus winner of the FAO e-learning Academy Global Youth Contest, “From Learning to Impact”. 🏆

From the seeds we plant to the crops we harvest and trade, protecting plant health helps protect our food supply.

On , the International Plant Protection Convention - IPPC highlights how international standards help prevent plant pests from spreading across borders.

This includes developing draft commodity-specific standards under ISPM 46, such as one for common bean seeds. Once adopted, these standards will help countries harmonize phytosanitary measures and make safe trade more efficient.

🔎 Pest of the Day: Xylella fastidiosa

One bacterium, many plants at risk.

Classified as an emerging pest under the IPPC’s Pest Outbreak Alert and Response System (POARS), this bacterium is transmitted by xylem-feeding insect vectors. It affects crops including olives, grapes, almonds, citrus and coffee, threatening production, landscapes, livelihoods and trade.

Early detection and accurate diagnosis support timely action to limit its spread. The IPPC’s diagnostic protocol DP 25, under ISPM 27, provides minimum requirements to reliably detect and identify this pest.

🚨 IPPC Pest Alert: Xylella fastidiosa detected in Luxembourg 🇱🇺

Luxembourg has confirmed the presence of Xylella fastidiosa at three sites in the country’s Moselle vineyards. The bacterium is classified as an emerging pest of global concern under the IPPC Pest Outbreak Alert and Response System (POARS), marking a new occurrence in a previously unaffected country.

🔎 On 12 October 2026, laboratory tests confirmed the bacterium in samples collected from Mertert and Grevenmacher. Luxembourg authorities are now implementing phytosanitary measures to prevent its further spread.

🌱 Why does this matter? Early detection, timely reporting and rapid phytosanitary action are essential to limiting the spread of emerging plant pests and protecting agriculture and biodiversity.

🌱 What does it take to bring food from the field to our tables?

At FAO’s Global Exhibition in Rome, visitors explored the journey from seeds and cultivation to harvest, trade and consumption.

Along the way, the International Plant Protection Convention - IPPC highlighted how international phytosanitary standards, including ISPM 15, help prevent the spread of plant pests while supporting safe trade.

🎨 At the Kids Area, young visitors became Plant Health Heroes, learning why protecting crops, forests and biodiversity matters through fun games and colouring activities.
