2020 Nobel Peace Prize Laureate. The World Food Programme was created in 1961, as an experiment to provide food aid through the UN system.

The UN World Food Programme delivers food and lifesaving support in crises and helps communities scale up solutions to hunger and malnutrition. In 1965, WFP became a fully-fledged UN programme, to last for “as long as multilateral food aid is found feasible and desirable”. In a world of plenty, where enough food is produced to feed everyone on the planet, hunger should be a thing of the past. However, conflict, climate change, disasters, inequality and – most recently – the pandemic, mean one in nine people globally is still going to bed hungry and famine looms for millions. Powered by the passion, dedication and professionalism of our 20,000 staff worldwide, the World Food Programme (WFP) works in over 120 countries and territories to bring life-saving food to people displaced by conflict and made destitute by disasters, and help individuals and communities find life-changing solutions to the multiple challenges they face in building better futures. We work to enhance nutrition in women and children, support smallholder farmers in improving productivity and reducing losses, help countries and communities prepare for and cope with climate-related shocks, and boost human capital through school feeding programmes. In conflict situations, we bring relief to exhausted populations and use food assistance to build pathways to peace and stability – work for which WFP was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2020.

For Margarita, school is a place to learn, play and dream about the future. Behind every meal served at school is a system that helps make all of it possible.

In Ukraine, WFP introduced School Connect, a digital platform that helps schools and authorities track funding, monitor meal programmes and make more informed decisions. By digitizing reporting and data collection, the platform reduces administrative burdens and gives decision-makers a clearer picture of how school feeding programmes are performing.

In a programme that co-financed more than 38 million meals during the 2025-2026 school year, better data helps ensure resources reach the schools and students who need them most.

New digital tools are helping WFP forecast needs, optimize supply chains and coordinate operations across the world's largest humanitarian network, making it easier to get food where it's needed, when it's needed.

The solutions to get ahead of hunger already exist. With the funding and access to use them at scale, WFP can protect millions of people from the worst of the shocks ahead.

What do you use when a truck can't get through, a boat can't reach the shore and a road no longer exists?

WFP uses all-terrain vehicles.

Able to travel through water, mud and wetlands, and carry up to 1.5 metric tons of cargo, these amphibious vehicles help WFP deliver assistance where conventional transport can't.

By overcoming some of the biggest logistical barriers in humanitarian operations, these amphibious vehicles can help reduce delivery costs and expand access to communities that are difficult to reach.

🚨Escalating conflict in Yemen is cutting off life-saving assistance to 800,000 people.

In Taiz, shifting frontlines, blocked roads and growing insecurity are severely restricting humanitarian access.

The loss of access is especially alarming given that Taiz has some of the country’s highest levels of food insecurity.

Food supplies are also running dangerously low. Wheat flour stocks are nearly exhausted, while remaining supplies in local markets may last only a short time if access constraints continue.

WFP is providing emergency assistance where it can and stands ready to scale up as access allows. Safe and sustained humanitarian access, together with urgent funding, is critical to reach families in need.

For many children, a meal at school represents the chance to focus, learn, and thrive.

In Kenya, the school meals programme has grown across the country. Food produced by Kenyan farmers is delivered to the schools, supporting hundreds of thousands of children.

📍Yemen: hunger is surging as conflict displaces more than 200,000 people.

Recent WFP monitoring in accessible areas found that 74% of households are unable to meet their basic food needs. This is a record number for this year and indicates food security is significantly deteriorating.

WFP is ready to expand food assistance, but access and safety are crucial to delivering immediate food assistance to high-risk areas.

Despite losing their home when Cyclone Ditwah struck📍Sri Lanka, eight-year-old Thakshila and four-year-old Thilageshila are continuing school and looking ahead.

Their family, who worked on a tea estate, now lives in a temporary tent exposed to the highlands’ changing weather: intense heat during the day, followed by cold and rain at night.

Their mother, Selvakumari, is determined that the cyclone will not decide her daughters’ future. She wants education to give them opportunities beyond the hardship the family is facing.

“WFP was the first assistance we received,” Selvakumari says.

Through cash assistance, the family can decide what they need most, from nutritious food to essential medicine, while they wait to rebuild their home and livelihood. This flexibility is especially important after a disaster, when every household’s circumstances are different and needs can change quickly.

Following Cyclone Ditwah, WFP scaled up cash and voucher assistance to help affected families cover immediate food needs and other essential expenses, complementing Government-led recovery efforts.

Cash assistance gives families choice and dignity at a time when so much has been taken from them. It helps parents prioritize their most urgent needs today, while taking the first steps towards recovery tomorrow.

For Selvakumari, that means keeping food on the table, accessing medicine and protecting her daughters’ chance to keep learning.

Because responding to a disaster is not only about meeting needs in the first days. It is also about helping families regain stability and rebuild their lives.
