2020 Nobel Peace Prize Laureate. The World Food Programme was created in 1961, as an experiment to provide food aid through the UN system.

The UN World Food Programme delivers food and lifesaving support in crises and helps communities scale up solutions to hunger and malnutrition. In 1965, WFP became a fully-fledged UN programme, to last for “as long as multilateral food aid is found feasible and desirable”. Powered by the passion, dedication and professionalism of our 20,000 staff worldwide, the World Food Programme (WFP) works in over 120 countries and territories to bring life-saving food to people displaced by conflict and made destitute by disasters, and help individuals and communities find life-changing solutions to the multiple challenges they face in building better futures. We work to enhance nutrition in women and children, support smallholder farmers in improving productivity and reducing losses, help countries and communities prepare for and cope with climate-related shocks, and boost human capital through school feeding programmes. In conflict situations, we bring relief to exhausted populations and use food assistance to build pathways to peace and stability – work for which WFP was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2020.

🚨 Flash floods and landslides in northern Nepal have claimed lives, displaced families and destroyed livelihoods.

At least 10,000 households are in need of immediate relief as communities cope with the aftermath.

Search and rescue efforts remain the priority, but access to some of the hardest-hit communities is a major challenge.

WFP is on the ground in Nepal and ready to scale-up its support to the Government-led emergency response as needed. WFP has already dispatched emergency food assistance for up to 5,000 people and is supporting the movement of critical relief supplies.

She visits a WFP-supported health centre to collect nutritional supplements that help protect vulnerable children from malnutrition.

Across Somalia, families are facing a dangerous combination of drought, displacement, conflict and rising costs. Many have exhausted their savings, lost livestock and crops, and been forced to leave their homes in search of food and water.

The country now faces one of the world's worst child malnutrition crises.

WFP teams are delivering the majority of food assistance to families facing crisis but can barely reach 1 in 10 people who need it due to funding shortfalls.

The window to prevent catastrophe is still open. We must act now.
