7 July 2026: Adult groups spreading in Morocco

Key points:

Overview: The Desert Locust outbreak continued in Morocco with widespread groups of adults.
Current situation: Several immature adult groups formed over widespread areas in Morocco. In Algeria, a few immature adult groups were found, together with isolated and scattered hoppers and adults. In Mauritania, isolated and scattered adults were observed, while groups were reported by locals early in the month. Isolated adults were seen in Iran. No locusts were reported elsewhere.

Control operations: Doubled in June (88 501 ha treated) compared to May (41 946 ha).

Forecast: Adult groups may form small swarms in Morocco, where maturation may progress, and some mature groups may migrate towards the Oriental region and western Algeria, where breeding could continue in July. However, most groups may move southwards into Mauritania or other Sahelian countries, where summer breeding is expected to begin.

Situation actuelle : Plusieurs groupes d’ailés se sont formés sur de vastes étendues au Maroc à mesure que la plupart des groupes et bandes larvaires réalisaient leur mue imaginale. En Algérie, quelques groupes d'ailés immatures ont été observés, ainsi que des larves et ailés isolés et épars. En Mauritanie, des ailés isolés et épars ont été observés et des groupes avaient été signalés début juin par les populations locales. Dans la Région orientale, des ailés isolés ont été observés en Iran. Aucun criquet n’a été signalé ailleurs.
Opérations de lutte : doublé en juin (88 501 ha traités) par rapport à mai (41 946 ha).

Prévisions : des groupes d’ailés pourraient former des petits essaims au Maroc, où la maturation pourrait progresser; il est possible que certains groupes matures migrent vers l’Oriental et l’ouest de l’Algérie et y poursuivent leur reproduction en juillet. ي شهر مايو، وتحديدا في المنطقة الغربية، تشكلت أعداد كبيرة من مجموعات الحشرات الكاملة في مناطق واسعة من المغرب مع استمرار تجنح معظم مجموعات وبقع الحوريات. كما انتشرت الحشرات الكاملة والحوريات المشتتة على نطاق واسع. في الجزائر، تم رصد بعض مجموعات الحشرات الكاملة غير الناضجة جنسيا، إلى جانب الحوريات والحشرات الكاملة الانعزالية والمشتتة. في موريتانيا، لوحظت الحشرات الكاملة الانعزالية والمشتتة، بينما أبلغ السكان المحليون عن وجود مجموعات في بداية الشهر.
أما في المنطقة الوسطى فلم يتم الإبلاغ عن وجود الجراد .
بينما في المنطقة الشرقية لوحظت الحشرات الكاملة الانعزالية في إيران.
التوقعات
في المنطقة الغربية، قد تشكل مجموعات الحشرات الكاملة أسراباً صغيرة في المغرب، حيث قد يتطور النضج الجنسي، وقد تهاجر بعض المجموعات الناضجة جنسيا نحو منطقة الشرق وغرب الجزائر، حيث يمكن أن يستمر التكاثر في يوليو. ومع ذلك، قد تتحرك معظم المجموعات جنوباً إلى موريتانيا أو دول ساحلية أخرى، حيث من المتوقع أن يبدأ التكاثر الصيفي. يجب أن تستمر عمليات المسح والمكافحة بكثافة عالية في المناطق المتأثرة، ويجب إجراء المسوحات في دول منطقة الساحل.

Seasonal precipitation predictions in the summer and winter breeding areas (July–December 2026)

➔ The dynamical models indicate that conditions are persisting, with a likelihood of becoming one of the strongest on record.

➔ Drier‑than‑normal conditions are expected in , the area, and the during July and August, while above‑normal rainfall is forecast in northern Africa.

➔ From September onwards, wetter conditions are expected to develop in association with a positive Indian Ocean Dipole, expanding to widespread above‑normal rainfall across northern and eastern Africa and the by October.

➔ Drier‑than‑normal conditions are expected to persist in until October.
Gregarious breeding will conclude in and . Summer breeding will begin in and, at a smaller scale, in other Sahelian areas in July.
Breeding should continue in the Western Region during August and September, increasing the risk of outbreaks from September onwards.

Prévisions pluviométriques saisonnières: juillet–décembre 2026

Les modèles dynamiques indiquent que les conditions El Niño persistent, avec une probabilité de devenir parmi les plus fortes jamais enregistrées.

Des conditions plus sèches que la normale sont attendues en Afrique de l’Est, dans la région de la mer Rouge et dans la péninsule Arabique en juillet et août, tandis que des précipitations supérieures à la normale sont prévues en Afrique du Nord.

À partir de septembre, des conditions plus humides devraient se développer en lien avec un dipôle positif de l’océan Indien, s’étendant à des précipitations largement supérieures à la normale sur l’Afrique du Nord et de l’Est ainsi que le Moyen‑Orient d’ici octobre.

Des conditions plus sèches que la normale devraient persister en Inde jusqu’en octobre. La reproduction grégaire se terminera au Maroc et en Algérie.
La reproduction estivale commencera en Mauritanie et, à plus petite échelle, dans d’autres zones sahéliennes en juillet. La reproduction devrait se poursuivre dans la Région occidentale en août et septembre, augmentant le risque de recrudescence à partir de septembre.

➪ Overview: The Desert locust outbreak continued in with widespread groups of hoppers and adults.

➪ Current situation: Several hopper groups and a few bands formed over widespread areas in Morocco, where numerous immature adult groups also developed. In , a few immature adult groups were present, together with scattered hoppers and hopper groups. No locusts were reported elsewhere.
Control operations: Increased in May (41 792 ha treated) compared to April (39 025 ha).

➪ Forecast: Fledging will continue in Morocco, leading to an increase in immature adult groups and small swarms. These will eventually mature and lay in suitable breeding areas, while most of them are expected to migrate to Algeria or Mauritania during June and July.

6 juin 2026 : DES GROUPES SUR DE GRANDES ÉTENDUES AU MAROC

➪ Vue d'ensemble : La résurgence du criquet pèlerin a continué au avec des groupes de larves et d’adultes sur de grandes étendues.

➪ Situation actuelle : Plusieurs groupes larvaires et quelques bandes se sont formés sur de grandes étendues au Maroc, où de nombreux groupes d’adultes immatures se sont également développés. En , quelques groupes d’adultes immatures étaient présents, ainsi que des larves éparses et des groupes larvaires. Aucun criquet n’a été signalé ailleurs.

➪ Opérations de lutte : En augmentation en mai (41 792 ha traités) par rapport à avril (39 025 ha).

➪ Prévisions : Les mues imaginales se poursuivront au Maroc, entraînant une augmentation des groupes d’adultes immatures et de petits essaims. Certains finiront par atteindre la maturité et pondre dans les zones de reproduction encore favorables, mais la majorité devraient migrer vers l’Algérie ou la Mauritanie en juin et juillet.

Seasonal precipitation predictions: June–November 2026

➡ The models indicate that the transition into El Niño conditions is progressing as expected, with this event likely to become one of the strongest on record. These conditions, together with a developing positive Indian Ocean Dipole, are expected to result in drier‑than‑normal conditions across the Horn of Africa, the southern Arabian Peninsula, Pakistan and India during the three coming months.

➡ Below‑normal rainfall is also forecast across the northern Sahel from Senegal to the Red Sea, while above‑normal rainfall is expected in northwestern Africa.

➡ From September onwards, the positive Indian Ocean Dipole is likely to favour above‑normal rainfall in East Africa during the autumn. Gregarious spring breeding will continue in Morocco and may extend into Algeria.

➡Summer breeding may occur in atypical areas in the Western Region, increasing the risk of outbreaks from September onwards.

Prévisions pluviométriques saisonnières dans les zones de reproduction printanière, estivale et hivernale du Criquet pèlerin (juin – novembre 2026)

➡Les modèles indiquent que la transition vers des conditions El Niño progresse comme prévu, cet événement étant susceptible de devenir l’un des plus forts jamais enregistrés. Ces conditions, associées à un dipôle positif de l’océan Indien en cours de développement, devraient entraîner des conditions plus sèches que la normale sur la Corne de l’Afrique, la péninsule arabique méridionale, le Pakistan et l’Inde au cours des trois prochains mois.

➡Des précipitations inférieures à la normale sont également prévues sur le nord du Sahel, du Sénégal à la mer Rouge, tandis que des précipitations supérieures à la normale sont attendues en Afrique du Nord‑Ouest.

➡À partir de septembre, le dipôle positif de l’océan Indien devrait favoriser des pluies supérieures à la normale en Afrique de l’Est pendant l’automne. La reproduction printanière grégaire se poursuivra au Maroc et pourrait s’étendre à l’Algérie.

6 May 2026: Breeding continues in Morocco

Overview: The Desert Locust outbreak continued in Morocco with further breeding.

Current situation: Hopper groups and small bands appeared at many sites across Morocco, while breeding mature adult groups declined during the second half of the month; a few adult groups were observed breeding in Algeria. Only isolated locusts were detected in the Canary Islands. No locusts were reported elsewhere.
Control operations: Increased in April (39 025 ha treated) compared to March (25 137 ha).

Forecast: Hopper groups may continue developing in Morocco and appear in Algeria. New adult groups may appear and move northwards for further spring breeding, and southwards into Mauritania.
