Today, on , we are reminded that the environmental challenges facing our planet from biodiversity loss to climate change are deeply interconnected and require collective action.
As extreme weather events continue to affect ecosystems, agriculture and livelihoods, the need to conserve and sustainably use biodiversity has never been greater. At the heart of this effort lies crop diversity: the foundation of resilient agrifood systems, food security and climate adaptation.
Through the Multilateral System of Access and Benefit-sharing, Benefit-sharing Fund and Global Information System, the International Plant Treaty helps countries work together to conserve, share and use plant genetic resources for food and agriculture. These collaborative mechanisms support farmers, researchers and policymakers in developing climate-resilient crops and strengthening food systems for future generations.
In his message for World Environment Day 2026, Secretary Kent Nnadozie highlights the importance of multilateral cooperation in addressing global environmental challenges and explains how the International Plant Treaty provides a practical blueprint for linking biodiversity conservation with real-world climate adaptation. 🌳🐝☀️🦋💦🌱
