More Than Education: My 10-Year Journey of Belief, Belonging, and Becoming
For me, Angel Xpress Foundation (Andheri East) has never been just a place to study—it has been a part of who I am becoming.
I joined AXF in Class 1 as a shy, underconfident child who found it difficult to speak up or believe in myself. Today, as I stand on the brink of college, I can see how these 10 years have shaped me in ways I couldn’t have imagined.
AXF became the neev—the foundation of my education. But beyond academics, it gave me something deeper: a sense of belonging. With constant encouragement from my teachers, I slowly found my voice. They stood by me, believed in me through my doubts, and helped me build confidence step by step.
What has stayed with me the most is the way I was taught—not just through books, but with care, patience, and genuine belief. My teachers didn’t just teach lessons; they helped me build values, resilience, and self-confidence.
Over the years, AXF supported me not only academically, but also emotionally, mentally, and financially—never letting me feel alone in my journey.
Like any journey, I know there were moments I could have done more—been more expressive, more active. But even this reflection is something AXF has taught me: to keep learning and growing.
Today, I am stronger, more confident, and more determined. And I know this transformation didn’t happen by chance—it was built over years of support, care, and belief.
AXF is not just an organization for me. It is my support system, my guide, and a lifelong connection—one I will carry with me wherever I go.

Active citizenship often begins with small, consistent actions. At the Angel Xpress Foundation - Santacruz Centre (Evening Batch), its impact can be seen in the everyday transformations of the children and volunteers who come together in this shared learning space.

When many children first join the centre, they are quiet and hesitant. Speaking in English feels intimidating and participating in class discussions can seem overwhelming. But week after week, as volunteers continue to show up with patience and dedication, something remarkable begins to change.

The children slowly grow more confident and comfortable. Their participation in class increases, their interactions with volunteers become more natural, and their fluency in English steadily improves. What once started as simple lessons soon turns into curious conversations, with children asking questions beyond the syllabus and showing a growing eagerness to explore and learn.

This transformation is the result of active citizenship in action — volunteers dedicating their time and energy to uplift young minds, and children learning to take ownership of their own growth.

Volunteer Ela Sen reflected on this experience and said, “The centre has truly become my happy place. Seeing the children grow more confident and curious every year reminds me how powerful small acts of consistency can be.”

Over time, the centre becomes more than just a place for academic support. Through storytelling sessions, safety awareness workshops, music classes, art and craft activities, and group activities, children develop creativity, communication skills, and confidence. Their academic performance in school improves as well, with some students even securing first and second ranks in their respective classes.

Another meaningful change is the sense of responsibility that develops among the children themselves. Older students naturally step forward to help the younger ones with lessons and guide them during activities, learning empathy and leadership along the way.

Volunteer Meenakshi Mathur also shared her experience, saying, “What started as volunteering has now become like being part of an extended family. Watching the children grow and succeed is one of the most fulfilling experiences.”

The story of the Santacruz centre reminds us that active citizenship is not always loud or dramatic. Often, it simply looks like showing up consistently, sharing knowledge, and caring deeply about the community around us.

And when these small acts continue week after week, they create something powerful — confident learners, compassionate individuals, and a generation growing into alert, informed, and active citizens.

You too can change your neighborhood. Gather like minded people and start a free learning center in a Garden or a Community Hall to change futures of school going children living in nearby slums.

🎄 A Decade of Impact — Thanks to Our CSR Santas 🎅
As the year winds down and we celebrate Christmas — a season of giving, belief, and hope — I find myself deeply grateful for the CSR partners who have played Santa not just once, but year after year, for thousands of children at Angel Xpress Foundation (AXF).

When we talk about AXF creating change, we speak of partnership, not philanthropy alone. Our CSR partners have believed in our grassroots mission — financially, yes — but more importantly, with trust and patience.

To all our partners, especially long-term champions like L&T and Kotak, MMoser, Matrix and those who’ve made defining contributions such as EY, Deloitte, Gharda Chemicals, and others — you are the engine behind every milestone we’ve reached.

The greatest gift our CSR partners have given us is the ability to scale thoughtfully and sustainably:

Long-standing support from partners has helped us open Free Learning Centres in underserved pockets of Mumbai, reaching more children year on year.

CSR support has enabled us to professionalise — strengthening MIS, reporting systems, and investing in the people and processes that ensure quality at scale.

🌟 Standing Together in Crisis
If Christmas is about hope in dark times, then the COVID-19 pandemic truly revealed the heart of our partnerships.

Our Partners and retail donors ensured learning didn’t stop — helping us procure devices and data packs, and laying the foundation for our hybrid learning model.

EY came on board during COVID, supporting ration distribution for our families when survival mattered more than anything else. Gharda Chemicals, also began supporting us during that difficult phase, both continue to stand by our mission today.

Our CSR partners stayed, adapted, and trusted us to reallocate budgets where the need was greatest. This kind of belief is rare — and priceless.

What we cherish most is that our CSR relationships go far beyond compliance. Employees from JP Morgan, Tata ProEngage, Kotak, and others stepped into classrooms, mentoring spaces, and skill-building initiatives — enriching our children’s learning journeys in ways no curriculum alone can.

Earlier this year, Educational Initiatives, an external and independent education research organisation, conducted learning gap assessments across Angel Xpress centres. These baseline assessments gave us an honest, data-backed picture of where our students stand.

One finding stood out clearly: reading comprehension needed focused strengthening.

What happened next is something we’re deeply proud of.

💪 Volunteers in Action

Our English volunteers, subject mentors and trainers didn’t just acknowledge the gap — they stepped up. Our English Training team designed a Reading Comprehension module and this was conducted by our volunteers across centres. It incorporated practical tips and activities, ensuring the exercise felt like learning, not an exam.

Thanks to this effort, an important reality became visible:

While our children are performing significantly better than their peers in school, they approach comprehension with greater confidence, show stronger listening skills, and engage more thoughtfully with texts — a testament to consistent volunteer-led intervention.

What the Assessments Taught Us -

Students were more comfortable with MCQs, while sentence formation and sequencing need continued focus.

Listening skills emerged as a clear strength across centres.

Speaking confidence remains an area we are consciously nurturing.

Performance closely matched baseline data, reaffirming the value of structured diagnostics.

Most importantly, students enjoyed the process, understood what was being asked, and felt encouraged to try — which in itself is a powerful outcome.

🙏 Our Deepest Gratitude

This progress is possible because of our volunteers — professionals, homemakers, students, and retirees show up week after week with patience, empathy, and belief in every child’s potential.

To our English mentors, centre heads, and trainers: thank you for your insight, commitment, and for constantly raising the bar for quality learning.

When volunteers lead with heart and rigour, children catch up.

*Rewriting what it means to be a boy in my community*

My name is Ganesh Yadav, and I’m 19.

Where I live, the path for young men is often dictated by financial survival, not academic ambition. For us, finishing school isn’t the goal but a detour. After Class 10 or 12, the pressure to contribute to the family income forces most boys to drop out.

My family of five relies on a small clothing shop, generating a total monthly income of about ₹15,000. Every expense felt like a luxury. Compounding this, coming from a Hindi-medium school, my lack of confidence in English became a severe barrier to career guidance and college admissions. My dreams felt unreachable because I had no role models who had made it.

Joining AXF in 2018 didn’t just teach me English; it taught me belief. My first day, watching my peers speak English fluently, became my turning point: "If they can do it, why can’t I?"

The mentorship I received provided the direction I desperately lacked. AXF helped me overcome my language barrier, build computer literacy, and develop the confidence to express myself clearly.

Today, I’m pursuing a Bachelor's degree in Computer Science and specializing in Machine Learning, with the goal of becoming an AI Engineer.

But the biggest change is that I am now volunteering at AXF, teaching Physics and Math to the younger students. I get to be the role model I never had.

When one boy breaks the cycle of poverty and low expectations, he doesn't just change his own life but he creates a visible pathway for his entire community.

Thank you, Angel Xpress Foundation, for giving me the guidance, confidence, and belief to build a future I once only imagined.
