Being a strong voice for her community has been the highlight for Cllr Joy Beard, from 100% Redress party.
Two years on since Local Elections 2024 we asked women councillors living in rural Ireland how it’s all going.
Over the coming weeks they will share with us their highlights, the biggest challenges and advice to anyone considering running in Local Elections 2029.
Here we feature Donegal Cllr Joy Beard, just one of 3 women on Donegal County Council, she shares her highlight to-date.

‘If we want to change the world - electing more women is a good start’.
That was one of the key messages at event hosted by See Her Elected and Women For Election, called ‘Elect Women for A Change’ which took place in the European Parliament Liaison Office in Ireland, Dublin this week.
The event was addressed by world-renowned political scientist Mona Lena Krook, whose most recent book is also titled ‘Elect Women for A Change’.
Her talk was followed by a panel discussion featuring women involved in politics - local, national and European.
Moderator for the event was journalist Kathy Sheridan.
The panel included:
*Senator Alison Comyn, Chair of Oireachtas Women’s Caucus
*Grace O’Sullivan former MEP
*Cllr Helen Ogbu, Galway City Council
*Cllr Emer Kelly, Roscommon County Council
The event was hosted in person in Dublin but also streamed online, to women all over Ireland.
They provided great insights into why and how they got involved in politics, the highlights to-date, the challenges they have faced, why we need more women in politics and their advice to any woman who might want to get involved.
Thanks to everyone who joined us on the night, in person or online.

See Her Elected has just concluded an amazing collaboration with the Mary Robinson Centre.
Through a programme called ‘Neart na mBan - Strength of Women’, a free civic empowerment programme.
SHE visited five communities in Mayo during May.
First stop was Inisturk Island, one of Mayo’s inhabited offshore islands, one of the county’s most distinctive and resilient rural communities.
Then it was onto Solas, in Aghleam, a gateway to the captivating history, culture, and natural wonders of the Erris region.
We also visited the Mary Robinson Centre in Ballina, a fitting setting in which to bring together the themes of women’s voices, civic participation, and the future of rural Ireland.
Mulranny Arts a centre that promotes and advocates for creativity, culture and environmental awareness though the arts was another venue for a workshop.
There was also one hosted in Kiltimagh Museum, a former railway station, once the hub of activity in the life of Kiltimagh.
The series was coordinated by the Mary Robinson Centre, co-facilitated with See Her Elected, funded by Mayo County Council, through the Department of Housing and local Government fund Increasing Diversity and the Participation of Women in Local Government, and supported by the Mayo Public Participation Network.

Some great reaction to the first of two workshops we are hosting in Roscommon. If you didn’t make it to Roscommon County Council on Wednesday for our workshop, don’t worry, there’s another opportunity - come along next Wednesday, June 3, in Castlerea.
See Her Elected, in partnership with Roscommon County Council and Roscommon Women’s Network, will host ‘Supporting Active Citizenship in Roscommon’.
Whether it’s understanding what the Council does, joining the Public Participation Network, or considering running for election, there are more ways than you might think to have your voice heard. No experience needed, just an interest in your community!

*Join us on 3rd June at 7pm, in Trinity Arts Centre, Castlerea, F45AW27.
