Community Voices Shaping a Safer Longford

As part of the Have your say campaign, LWL Stepping Stones Programme (Parenting Independently Programme) recently welcomed representatives from the Longford Community Safety Partnership for a productive and engaging discussion focused on building safer, stronger, and more inclusive communities.

Led by LWL Director of Programmes, Kathleen Dowd, participants met with Community Safety Coordinator Janine Bartley to share their experiences and perspectives on the safety issues affecting the day-to-day lives of women and families across Longford. The group discussed practical solutions and highlighted the importance of community-led responses to challenges such as crime, anti-social behaviour, isolation, social exclusion, and displacement.

Participants recognised the valuable collaborative work already taking place through local organisations and initiatives, including supports around social inclusion, domestic violence prevention, early years services, education, trauma-informed supports, and community development. The discussion also highlighted the need for continued Government investment in women's groups, family supports, community education programmes, and local services that help people thrive.

A key theme emerging from the meeting was the importance of creating safe spaces for children and young people. Participants emphasised the need for more accessible play areas, recreational facilities, and meaningful summer activities. Young people should be actively involved in planning these opportunities, ensuring they feel heard, valued, and connected to their communities. When children and young people have a sense of ownership and belonging, communities are better equipped to reduce vandalism, anti-social behaviour, and social isolation.

The meeting reinforced a simple but powerful message: community collaboration is the way forward. By working together, we can create safer, more connected communities where everyone has the opportunity to participate, belong and flourish.

As a community organisation supporting women and children in crisis and providing a safe environment for our service users and staff, this is what we were faced with yesterday morning – vandalism on our premises in Ardnacassa over the weekend. We have CCTV footage and this is with the Gardaí at present who have been very responsive to this issue. However, it is saddening that the Gardaí are having to respond to call outs over petty vandalism. Also, repairing the damage to our creche gardens will have a severe impact on us financially. We cannot understand why individuals think that it is ok to behave this way and we are disgusted at the people who did this. The damage occurred between the hours of 14:40 and 17:00 on Saturday and 11:00 and 16:00 on Sunday. We thank our hard working staff for ensuring that the areas were cleaned and made risk free promptly and we can continue to run safe services and we thank all those in the community who support us. Shame on those that engage in this destructive, appalling behaviour.

May was an incredibly busy and impactful month for our Domestic Violence (DV) Support Service team! We have been out in the community, building partnerships, and raising vital awareness to support victims of domestic abuse.

We participated in Go Purple Day to raise awareness for domestic abuse services (photo 1), and delivered specialized training to the Construction Industry Federation (photo 2) and Longford Community Midwives (photo 3), equipping frontline healthcare workers with essential skills to ensure a stronger and safer network of support for vulnerable women. Besides, we provided 44 court accompaniments (photo 4).

This is just the beginning. We have many more projects, training sessions, and community events coming up soon, so keep an eye on our page for future updates.
