Community Voices Shaping a Safer Longford
As part of the Have your say campaign, LWL Stepping Stones Programme (Parenting Independently Programme) recently welcomed representatives from the Longford Community Safety Partnership for a productive and engaging discussion focused on building safer, stronger, and more inclusive communities.
Led by LWL Director of Programmes, Kathleen Dowd, participants met with Community Safety Coordinator Janine Bartley to share their experiences and perspectives on the safety issues affecting the day-to-day lives of women and families across Longford. The group discussed practical solutions and highlighted the importance of community-led responses to challenges such as crime, anti-social behaviour, isolation, social exclusion, and displacement.
Participants recognised the valuable collaborative work already taking place through local organisations and initiatives, including supports around social inclusion, domestic violence prevention, early years services, education, trauma-informed supports, and community development. The discussion also highlighted the need for continued Government investment in women's groups, family supports, community education programmes, and local services that help people thrive.
A key theme emerging from the meeting was the importance of creating safe spaces for children and young people. Participants emphasised the need for more accessible play areas, recreational facilities, and meaningful summer activities. Young people should be actively involved in planning these opportunities, ensuring they feel heard, valued, and connected to their communities. When children and young people have a sense of ownership and belonging, communities are better equipped to reduce vandalism, anti-social behaviour, and social isolation.
The meeting reinforced a simple but powerful message: community collaboration is the way forward. By working together, we can create safer, more connected communities where everyone has the opportunity to participate, belong and flourish.
