RNLI, Galway Lifeboat Station

RNLI, Galway Lifeboat Station The RNLI Lifeboat Station at Galway was established in 1995 because of the increasing number of search and rescue incidents in the area.

Today the station operates an inshore B class Atlantic 85 lifeboat. At the Executive Committee Meeting held on 23 March 1994, it was resolved that an Atlantic Inshore lifeboat be established at Galway City because of the increasing number of search and rescue incidents in the area. Galway City is located on the north side of Galway Bay at the confluence of Lough Corrib with Galway Bay.

ic 21 class lifeboat placed on temporary station duty at Galway on 27 March. Temporary accommodation for the lifeboat and crew was provided. A new launching davit was also installed on the quay at this time. Following successful completion of the evaluation period, it was agreed that permanent facilities should be provided. Proposals were therefore drawn up for the construction of a new boathouse over the revetment adjacent to the launching davit. These proposals were subsequently approved and work commenced in February 1997 and completed in September 1997. New Atlantic 75 lifeboat B738 placed on service on 3 September.

We are appealing to people to remember and share our water safety advice with family and friends, particularly young people and teenagers as the schools break for summer.

If you find yourself in trouble in the water, the RNLI’s safety advice is Float to Live:
• Tilt your head back with your ears submerged
• Relax and try to breathe normally
• Move your hands and legs to help you stay afloat
• It’s OK if your legs sink, we all float differently
• Once your breathing is under control, call for help or swim to safety.

If you see someone else in trouble in the water, remember Phone, Float, Throw:
• Phone 999 or 112 and ask for the Coast Guard to get help
• Tell the struggling person to Float to Live
• Throw them something that floats, such as a life ring.

Among all the other achievements, Shane also has the distinction of being the very first volunteer crew member officially enrolled at the Galway Lifeboat Station in May 1995. From crew to helm to his current role as Launch Authority, we are so proud of his years of commitment to our crew and to saving lives on Galway Bay..

From answering his first call as a teenager to leading crews through high-stakes rescues, Galway RNLI volunteer Shane Folan has seen it all.

The Galway native was one of the very first - and youngest - volunteers at Galway Lifeboat Station three decades ago. Now, over 150 callouts and several lives saved later, he is still volunteering with the RNLI in the Town of the Tribes.

With the lifeboat having celebrated 30 years in action, and with another busy summer on the horizon, Shane sat down with the Irish Independent to look at the past three decades of callouts and volunteering.

Celebrating National Volunteering Week 2026 and 30 years of Galway RNLI volunteer crew!

Without our thousands of volunteers, the RNLI would be unable to save lives at sea. From lifeboat and shore crews to fundraisers and water safety volunteers, every single volunteer role helps the RNLI to continue its lifesaving work.

Thank you to all the Galway RNLI volunteers past and present...
