What is it like to be an academic on the picket line? 🪧

IFUT member Professor Maebh Harding shares her experience and sends a message of solidarity to all members on strike today.

IFUT’s objective is a negotiated resolution that delivers for members, backed by a clear democratic mandate. The Government must now engage meaningfully with public service unions, put forward credible pay proposals and address the outstanding commitments at the heart of this dispute.

The strike is going ahead. ✊

In this video, IFUT General Secretary Frank Jones addresses members in the lead up to Wednesday’s action.

Next steps: full withdrawal of labour on 14 and 21 October
📅 Wednesday 14 October 2026: a 24-hour strike and full withdrawal of labour
📅 Wednesday 21 October 2026: a further 24-hour strike and full withdrawal of labour if the dispute remains unresolved

Members covered by the action should prepare to take part and stay in close contact with their branches. Branches will communicate local arrangements, including picket locations, rosters and other activity. Please keep monitoring IFUT’s national updates and follow the union’s instructions. If you have any difficulty with participation, raise it promptly with your branch or Head Office.

Thank you to every member who took part in last Monday’s action, the local gatherings and the teach-ins. Your solidarity made a real difference. ✊

The next step is full 24-hour strikes on Wednesday 14 and Wednesday 21 October. We’re seeking a fair pay settlement for 2026 and 2027, delivery of outstanding local bargaining claims, and a say in any changes to how we work.

If you’re not yet a member, join IFUT and stand with your colleagues. Contact your local branch for advice. 💪
