📣 Mandate is calling for changes to be made to employment laws so that employers are legally obliged to offer more contracted working hours to part-time workers.

📊 Based on recent findings on retail workers’ earnings from the Central Statistics Office – retail workers are earning around half of the average industrial wage per week and less than the Living Wage:

• Average weekly earnings for retail workers – including managers – is €553.08 just slightly over half of the average industrial wage of €1,074.61 per week and less than the Living Wage of €600.99 per week;

• Average number of working hours per week for such workers is 27.3 hours.

⚖️ To improve the number of working hours for part-time retail workers and their weekly earnings as a result, Mandate is seeking support through the Make Work Pay campaign from Oireachtas members to have the following amendments made to the 2018 Act.

💷 Make Work Pay

Pictured with Mandate Assistant General Secretary, Jim Fuery and President, Martin Mahony, at the briefing for Oireachtas members on the Make Work Pay campaign — at which the Labour Party committed to drafting and bringing forward Mandate’s proposed changes to the 2018 Employment (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act — were Ged Nash TD , Aodhán Ó Ríordáin MEP and George Lawlor TD.

The main objective of the briefing for Oireachtas members was to get buy-in from to sponsor Mandate's proposed amendments to the 2018 Employment (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act. These amendments would focus on legally obliging employers to offer contracts that are in line with the hours worked by staff in the previous six months and to offer additional hours to part-time workers first.
