💶 ⚖️ Fair wages for all ages!

Mandate's Greg Caffrey claims that the sub-minimum wage rates for workers under 20 are in breach of Ireland’s employment equality legislation on age discrimination grounds.

"Our employment equality legislation unambiguously prohibits discrimination against a worker on the grounds of age. The current treatment of young people under the age of 20 – forced to work for subminimum wage rates – is a clear denial of this protective measure. Furthermore, the existence of subminimum rates indirectly discriminates against older workers, as their chance to compete for jobs in certain sectors is severely diminished when it is permissible to employ younger workers in preference to them at a lower rate of pay."

Mandate NEC member Samantha Farrell speaking on motion 14: Sub-Minimum Wage at today's biennial delegate conference.

The Sub-Minimum Wage directly discriminates against young workers as it provides for young workers to be legally paid significantly lower rates of pay than that the National Minimum Wage of solely based upon a Young Workers age.

In recent years, Mandate has made repeated calls for the abolition of the blatant discriminatory practice of paying all workers under the age of 20, employed in minimum wage jobs, a rate that is less than the full statutory minimum wage. These demands were supported by the Low Pay Commission, who in 2024 issued a specific report that also called for the abolition of these subminimum rates.

It's time for the Government to act - fair wages for all ages!

🛑 Abuse is not part of the job!

Mandate Dublin City Centre local council member Keith McGovern speaking on Motion 9: Protection of Retail Workers at the biennial delegate conference today.

A survey of Mandate Trade Union members in 2025 showed that:

• Nearly two-thirds of bar and retail workers (63.42%) have experienced verbal abuse in their workplace

• Over a quarter have received threats to their physical safety (28.2%) while almost an eighth (11.38%) have experienced assault in their role as bar and retail workers.

Mandate is urging Minister Alan Dillon and his Government to support Senator Mary Fitzpatrick’s Protection of Retail Workers Bill 2025.

Mandate Assistant General Secretary Jim Fuery spoke of the need for Government to support decent jobs for workers in a changing retail environment at today's Biennial Delegate Conference.

đź›’ "Online shopping, self-service checkouts, and click-and-collect models are reshaping retail. But they are also contributing to redundancies and restructuring across major employers. Mandate has been working to get the Government to support bricks-and-mortar retail through policies that protect and sustain decent employment and today we publicly call on them to step up to the plate here."
