📢 TikTok redundancies hit Dublin workers

Around 300 jobs are set to go at TikTok’s Dublin office, despite plans to create 321 new roles.

Workers have raised concerns about the fairness of the redundancy and redeployment process, with some describing the consultation as a “box-ticking exercise”.

As John Bohan, organiser with the Communications Workers’ Union, said: “The redundancy process in TikTok hammers home the need for union recognition and collective bargaining in big tech. Our members found themselves stalled and blocked by the company. They found so-called mitigations [of redundancies] – including new roles – to be little more than box-ticking exercises.”

As work is outsourced, redistributed internationally and increasingly handled by AI-enabled solutions, the need for workers to have a real voice has never been clearer.

Union recognition and collective bargaining are essential to protecting workers through these changes. ✊

As unionised tech workers we refuse to cede all public discourse to the totalising and one sided agenda of governments and tech giants. We’re tired of being framed as passive victims of ideologically neutral technology. We’re tired of products aimed at accruing sickening profits are framed as socially necessary tools. We’re tired of not having a say.

If you’re interested in contributing to a movement of workers, users, people and communities against the increasingly all pervasive and authoritarian power of big tech - join us in October.

We cannot separate democracy from society from democracy in the workplace - tech workers want a better future for ourselves and our friends, families, and neighbours. Only through unity, coalition building, and through building power in workplace can we hope to steer our world away from the bleak future oligarchs have in mind.

DATA is hosting our own Workers’ AI Counter-Summit this October 10th & 11th in CWU HQ. This will be an AI critical event in opposition to Ireland’s International AI Summit in October - we reject apocalyptic grand narratives of the tech giants and we refuse to accept that workers are passive victims of technology and the bosses that wield it in pursuit of their super profits.

Our work, our communities, our planet - our futures - are being stolen from us by the big tech robber barons. We want contributions from workers from all sectors - tech and beyond. As Ireland seeks to position itself as an open playing field for the AI giants, data centres, and semi-conductor companies, we believe creating space for dissenting voices and organised worker power is more vital than ever.

We want to hear how AI is impacting you and your community. We want to hear from workers, artists, academics, journalists, and activists who are standing up to big tech.

The counter summit - broadly running under a tagline of “Workers Against Slopaganda”, will take place across 1 full day and 1 half day on Saturday 10th and Sunday 11th of October respectively in CWU HQ (William Norton House, 575 North Circular Road)

Contributions can be in the form of talks, workshops, art, music, poetry, film - as long as it’s human made and delivered! Email your proposal for a contributions over to [email protected]

If you don’t feel confident presenting a contribution in a formal way, shoot us an email and we’ll help flesh out your idea and see if it fits the event.

We aim to close the window for contributions in early-mid September.

Keep an eye out for the updates we’ll be dropping over the coming days and weeks

Redundancy is only the beginning.

New survey results from TikTok workers at risk of redundancy show deep concern about what comes next: financial insecurity, a weak jobs market, rising competition from layoffs across the tech sector, and the ability to afford housing.

As more tech companies cut jobs, workers are paying the price. Stronger redundancy protections, collective bargaining, and a real voice at work have never been more important.

Another Irish tech team is being cut.

Sedgwick is culling its Irish IT team and moving the work to an outsourced provider overseas. It's the latest example of skilled tech jobs being moved elsewhere while workers are left facing uncertainty.

This isn't an isolated case. Across the tech sector, workers are dealing with outsourcing, restructures and redundancies. That's why organising has never been more important.

Covalen has introduced new restrictions requiring workers to lock away their phones during shifts, with disciplinary action for breaches.

As CWU Deputy General Secretary Ian McArdle said, this is "a further tightening of the noose of control."

After years of layoffs and worsening conditions, workers deserve respect, fair treatment and a real voice at work, not ever tighter workplace controls.

Another round of redundancies. Another reminder of why tech workers need to organise and unionise.

Concentrix has placed 85 Ireland-based workers supporting Meta at risk of redundancy as the company closes its Dublin escalation desk. This is the latest in a series of cuts affecting platform workers across the tech sector.

The Communications Workers’ Union (CWU), which is supporting affected employees at Concentrix, said it was “alarmed by members’ reports of how the current redundancies in Concentrix are being carried out and their potential impact on platform safety for the client Meta” and “The level of engagement with elected representatives falls well below even the low threshold we expect from tech companies.”

Online platforms rely on skilled workers to keep us all safe. Those workers deserve respect, meaningful consultation, and fair redundancy terms and not to be treated as disposable.
