Launch of New Biodiversity Study of Boyne Marsh and Alluvial Woodland
The Heritage week event on Sunday at the Highlanes Gallery included the official launch of Tony Conaughy’s new publication, -Other Nations 3: Biodiversity at the Marsh & Alluvial Woodlands of the Boyne SAC, a study commissioned by Drogheda Tidy Towns and supported by the National Parks & Wildlife Service (NPWS) through the Peatlands & Natura Community Engagement Scheme.
The event drew an excellent turnout, with attendees enjoying an accessible and engaging presentation from Tony Conaughy and Dr Geraldine Stout. Tony’s fieldwork for this study involved detailed surveying along the Boyne corridor , mapping habitats, recording species, and documenting the ecological importance of the river’s wetlands and woodlands. His research highlights rare alluvial woodland, described as “one of the rarest native woodland types in Ireland”, and the extensive wetlands that “store floodwaters and act like natural sponges”, improving water quality, reducing flood risk, and supporting climate resilience.
Dr Stout added valuable historical context, showing how centuries of human activity have shaped the landscapes Tony documented. Together, their insights gave the audience a understanding of the natural and cultural significance of the Boyne SAC.
The talk also introduced the new Biodiversity Map of the Boyne Estuary, created as part of the project. The map highlights key biodiversity areas, marshes, reed beds, wet woodlands, nesting sites, and wildflower zones and is designed especially for schools and youth groups as a practical learning resource.
