Back in June, AfD politicians showed up at Romani homes in Gelsenkirchen with brooms, demanding they clean up the streets. The story behind this far-right publicity stunt runs deeper however, and has been going on for twenty years.

EU expansion, racialised "poverty migration" panic, court rulings that opened the door, welfare law that locked people out, and new restrictions being passed right now. It's all connected.

Today the Roma Rights Network publishes the Roma Rights Review: Summer 2026.

This bi-annual publication is the definitive assessment of the state of Roma rights across Europe, compiled from the direct testimony, legal casework, and field documentation of 34 member organisations across 18 countries.

The picture it paints is one of systematic dismantling.

Militarised police raids on Romani neighbourhoods in Greece have reached near-daily frequency under Operation ENTOS. The European Court of Human Rights has ruled against Slovakia, Serbia, and Greece in separate cases involving police torture, beatings, racist abuse, and failed investigations. Far-right extremists march in Waffen SS regalia, neo-Nazis firebomb a sleeping Romani family, all while centre-right parties continue to build tactical alliances the far-right. Governments in Italy, Slovenia, and Hungary have passed legislation that criminalises Romani communities, enables mass surveillance, apartheid, and permits child removal before birth.

At a time when activists need the most support, the proposed EU budget for 2028-2034 threatens to eliminate ring-fenced support for Roma equality and dissolve dedicated structures into generic funding pots.

Back in June 2026, we declared a state of acute crisis for Roma Rights in Europe. This publication is the evidence.

The Roma Rights Review is the successor to the Roma Rights Journal, the first and oldest academic human rights journal dedicated to Roma in Europe, published from 1996 until 2017. Reimagined for the current political climate, it is designed as a usable and actionable tool for anyone working to understand and improve the situation of Roma rights.

How can Romani women expect protection from domestic violence when police encourage "reconciliation" instead?

Our research shows systemic barriers: - risk assessments skipped, warnings replace investigations, and the danger to women is minimised because of racist stereotypes about Romani families.

Ramajana Asan sought help more than once. Her partner murdered her in her own home on 3 May 2025, in front of her five-year-old daughter. No protective measures prevented her death. The ERRC argued this was the result of discrimination based on her gender and ethnicity, but the national equality body said no.

Now, after a new EU Directive on violence against women was adopted in May 2024, governments have until 14 June 2027 to make it law. We want to know if this directive will protect Romani women, or just leave them behind again.

The ERRC is part of the EQUAL project with partners across four countries who will set up community paralegal teams and run legal clinics in marginalised neighbourhoods to to identify rights violations for Romani communities, people with disabilities, and refugees and connect them with legal support.

🇨🇿 Czech Republic: Forum for Human Rights works with disability communities in Prague, while Awen Amenca supports Romani communities in Ostrava.

🇬🇷 Greece: The Greek Council of Refugees focuses on migrant and refugee communities in Athens, while Pro Bono Publico is working with Romani communities.

🇭🇺 Hungary: Dzsaj Bhim Community works with Romani communities in Miskolc, supported by the ERRC, while Validity Foundation focuses on people with disabilities in Budapest's 8th district (many of whom are Roma).

🇮🇹 Italy: The Italian Coalition for Civil Liberties and Rights will run clinics serving Roma and migrant communities in Rome.

Instead of treating Roma rights, disability rights, and migrant rights as separate boxes, the activists aim to identify overlapping forms of discrimination and address them together with multiple communities.

On 2 August 1944, the last 4,300 Roma and Sinti at Auschwitz were gassed to death. More than 500,000 Roma and Sinti were killed in the Pharraijmos - the Roma Holocaust.

Fascism today is not some abstract, distant menace. It is a present, coordinating power across Europe. Its targets include people at the borders of Europe and beyond, but it also turns inward: Romani communities are securitised as a societal problem demanding progressively harsher 'solutions' every year. Meanwhile, the so-called mainstream centre has capitulated to the far-right and in many cases even collaborated and normalised fascist politics in Europe.

Silence is a weapon used by the far-right. Now is the time for active antifascism as a civic duty. Resist in any way you can.

Albania moved 95% of public services online. But what happens when entire communities can't get online? The ERRC just filed a legal complaint exposing how Albania's digital-only system locks out Roma and Egyptian families, while also putting their personal data at risk when they are forced to use 'middle-men'.

📢 The ERRC has filed a criminal complaint against Hungarian police over the death of Tamás Baki, a 37-year-old Romani father who was tasered at least 4 times, kicked while on the ground, and beaten during a routine stop. Two weeks later he was dead. Police claim their actions were "lawful." Witnesses say something very different happened.

🚨 On July 8th, four police officers in Százhalombatta, Hungary stopped Tamás, B. — a Romani father of two — on suspicion of drug use (Tamás has been diagnosed with mild schizophrenia). They tasered him at least four times, forced him to the ground, and according to eyewitnesses kicked and beat him until he lost consciousness.

While lying restrained on the ground, his breathing stopped and he fell into a coma. He sustained a broken nose, fractured facial bones, and severe brain damage. Two days ago, he died from his injuries in hospital.

He was a bricklayer who sold fruit and vegetables in the summer to support his family. He leaves behind two children.

The police say they acted "lawfully and proportionately." We disagree.

The ERRC is filing a legal complaint with the public prosecutor, demanding a full, independent investigation and criminal accountability for those responsible for Tamás' death, including an investigation into racist motivation of the officers involved.

This is not an isolated case. Police violence against Roma across Europe is a systemic crisis fuelled by institutional racism, protected by impunity, and is too often fatal. Hungary has already been found in breach of European human rights standards in Roma police brutality cases. Yet Roma keep dying at the hands of police.

Justice for Tamás. No more impunity.
